Just a query for those who have had surgery

Hi,

My Mum was diagnosed with BC in August last year and has since had 7 sessions of chemotherapy, a mastectomy and reconstruction. She is doing well and we are waiting to hear if she is having radiotherapy and then when she will start herceptin.

I just feel a little concerned at the moment that we don’t seem to be having much contact with the hospital as her appointment is a week today to find out about the herceptin and radiotherapy and I don’t know what’s going on, i.e. how and when she is given the clear and what happens.

She had the mastectomy in May and had the reconstruction with the flap from the back but today said to me that her back is really tight and achy and her legs are very achy. She said they have been like that since she started chemo but just worse recently. I’m just so scared that it’s something to do with bone cancer now as I’ve read stories about this happening. Has anyone else had similar treatment and suffered with being achy?

Thanks for any help and advice.

Michelle.

Hi Michelle,

I had a bilateral mastectomy Nov 07 which i had immediate recon using expander implants. One of the ladies who was in the ward with me had the tram flap and her back still feels tight, but she says it feels better by the week. I have the achy legs, arms, fingers and toes (joint aches) which was down to the chemo that i had . If your both concerned, please pick up the phone and call your breast nurse, they would prefer you to call rather than worry. you’ll probably find that the aches is down to the chemo. My oncologist told me mine could last for 6-12 months after the chemo finished. Think it will be longer as i’m now on Arimidex and that is one of the side effects.

Warm wishes to you and your mum
