Just been diagnosed for the second time and having gene testing today

I’ve just been diagnosed with my second lump in just over three years. About to have gene testing for Brca 1 and 2 and although it’s not a bridge I am crossing yet, am needing to think about the possiblity of having a double mastectomy - or at least to open my head up to what it might mean and get ready in case I need to make a decision in the next month or so. I wondered if there is any one out there I can talk to about recovery and life after a double masechtomy. I love running and I’m a fit and active 52 year old who wants to stay that way for as long as I can. I’d be so grateful to hear of others experiences around this. Or even better anyone who might have been diagnosed with the Brca or other mutation but who is keeping the cancer at bay without having had a mastectomy.

Many thanks

Jan

Hi Janet

I don’t  have the Brca gene but I  had a bilateral  mastectomy  6 years ago and chose to have no reconstruction. I can run swim cycle and any other activity I  choose with no discomfort at all and was able to do this  6 weeks after my op but obviously took it steadily at first. The forums tend to be used by people  who have had problems  with treatment  but there are lots of us that don’t

Best wishes for the future whatever  you choose
