Just coincidence or some kind of genetic link

i was diagnosed with IDC three years ago and two of my aunts on my mums side of the family were also diagnosed and recently my cousin on the same side of the family has also been diagnosed. As we have a relatively small family with only 9 female relatives (not counting my daughters) and 4 of us have now been diagnosed I am concerned for my daughters who are in their early twenties and wonder if we would qualify for genetic testing. My mum had pancreatic cancer and I am sure I have read somewhere that, that can be linked to the BRCA2 gene.

Has anybody else with a similar family background had genetic testing or am I just overreacting? I just keep getting an uneasy feeling about this.

Hi Hollyberry, I would ask your GP or BCN about being referred for genetic testing. I had IDC bilaterally and was diagnosed last year. As my mum, aunt and a great aunt had all had ovarian or breast cancer I met the criteria for testing. Luckily it came back negative so just a coincidence. My sister is now having yearly mammograms to keep an eye on her as the family history is strong.

I hope this helps
