just got back from clinic

hi all,

first i want to thank you all for your positive wishes they mean alot.

Im not sure how to take my appt. basically i was examined by the consultant and he said there was not a specific lump and that he did not think i should have a scan at moment. then he gave me a leaflet about breast pain which i got from my GP and told me about how to manage the pain and cut down on caffeine etc.

i am glad obviously that he did not find i lump, but all the things he suggested i have already done, and when i was trying to talk about it he was not interested. i am going back in 8 weeks! my problem is this pain is there every day and is effecting my life quite alot and the last month has been awful and i feel a bit let down.

i wished i had been more assertive and said i would like a scan, i know women get breast pain but this pain is unbearable for me, im taking ibruprofen and co-codamol and this takes the edge off, so shall i just take them for the next 8 weeks? i know compared to some of you this is very trivial but i am not reassured that it is not somthing more serious. have bought some starflower oil to take but my GP told me they were not worth it (VERY confused).

sorry to go on. i feel very cloudy headed if you know what i mean.

thanks all.

Theres nothing bright or clever that I can say to make you feel better. I can understand why you are so confused and worried.

Theres no need to apologise for going on (in your words) either. I just wanted you to know that I was thinking about you and I hope you can be more assertive next time just to put your mind at ease. There must be something causing you this pain which they should get to the bottom of.

Take care for now
Fiona

thanks fiona,

i feel better just knowing that someone else does think that im not just moaning, so thank you for that.

not sure what to do. have bought some starflower oil as suggested so will try that for 2 weeks i think.
the consultant said he sees 20 new woman a week with breast pain. i dont know how bad theirs is?

thanks again. hope you are doing okay yourself

kelly

Hiya Kelly,

I feel dissapointed for you that you came away with no explananation of why you are in pain, if you are not happy keep pushing them, if you are in pain it affects you everyday life, tell them you want it sorted and soon, no ifs no buts.

Can you see another GP? Maybe someone else has better suggestions.

Hi Kelly
I am sorry to hear you are having such a troubled time at the moment. Have you thought of phoning the BCC helpline? It may help to talk confidentially about your concerns and how you are feeling at the moment. The staff who are either breast care nurses or trained staff with experience of breast care issues may be able to give you some help and advice.

The number to ring is freephone 0808 800 6000 the lines being open Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturdays 9am - 2pm.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards

Hi Kelly
Have just caught this fresh post by you - sorry to hear that you are no further forward.

It is dreadful to hear that painkillers are not working I know how that can affect your everyday life - not just you but your family and friends.

I definitely think you need a second opinion.

Best wishes
Maddy xxxx

Hi Kelly

I would definitely seek a second opinion if you are not happy with the outcome. At the end of the day we are talking about your health and life, so you need to know for certain. And any delay if it is bc is not worth the risk.

Apart from that though, hope you are OK. Let us know what you decide.

Take care

fushia- thanks for your reply, especially since you are going through a real hard time.i need to be more assertive i think!.

thanks to everyone! will go back to doctors on monday. spoke to a lovely lady on the phone from BCChelpline, had a good cry feel a bit better now. in the back of my mind they have not checked me properly was only in there 15mins. dont know if i can demand to be seen earlier at breast clinic? thanks again for all your support. big hugs and kisses being sent to you all.

Hi Kelly

I sympathise. I finished treatment for breast cancer in April and was doing great. Then about six weeks ago I developed excruciating rib pain which at its worst left me unable to even lift a cup of tea. No-one can tell me what caused it - they just say it’s muscular and ‘caused by my treatment’. I’m on painkillers and anti-inflammatories which help a little but I’m miserable. Being in constant pain really wears you down.

Your symptoms do not sound typical of breast cancer (although you can never be sure) and that is probably why you are being ‘dismissed’. If I were you I would pursue this as a painful condition that requires investigation rather than possible breast cancer, at least initially. Go and see a different GP, stress how much this pain is affecting your life and get some decent analgesics for a kick off. Insist on seeing someone who will take your concerns seriously. There must be breast specialists out there who specialise in breast conditions other than cancer. Maybe they can do some scans to find out what is wrong and then you’ll hopefully get reassurance that it isn’t cancer.

I know it can be hard to be assertive but no-one should have to live in pain. Just keep telling yourself that.

hi lola,

thanks for your reply, i hope you are feeling a bit better yourself. i am going to go back to GP in the morning.

i thought the breast clinic i was being sent too was all breast problems not just cancer, on the grand scheme of things,
i am embarrased to kick up such a fuss as if its not BC then i should be glad, i would feel better if i had a scan definetley, so i think that is where i will go from here. i have had problems in my armpit armpit and find i cant lift things to much and hold the baby on my right side as is too painful. thanks again.

talk to you soon

love kelly

Hi Kelly

I hope you get the referral you want after your visit to the doctors tomorrow. I know you are quite right in persisting on this issue because what ever is causing this pain needs tackling not just being bombarded with pain killers because they do not always cure they only mask problems.

You sound the sort of person who will not be fobbed off so go for it girl! And of course we are all still hoping for an innocent outcome in all this.

Carol

hi carol,

im not sure what the doctors will do? will have to see, suppose to go back to the breast clinic in 8 weeks, do you think the GP can do anything about it? i like to think i cant be fobbed off, but when i saw the consultant at the clinic. i sat there like a muppet! he was talking and i was thinking, your not helping me in anyway and i have already done everything you are suggesting, but i just sat there, i was so gutted i didnt dare speak as i knew i would cry like a baby. and my husband could have been asleep he just stood there looking around the room like he was daydreaming. anyway will have to sort this out. thanks again and hope your doing okay.

loads of love
