Kidney pain

Hi all,

I was hoping to get some advice/reassurance.  I underwent a maestectomy on 15th January and had my first chemo session (FEC) on 17th February.

I had 5 days if expected symptoms, nausea and fatigue however I was awoken this morning at 4am with excruciating pain in my lower to middle back. I can honestly say that I have never experienced anything so painful.

My husband eventually called an ambulance as we were terrified that my kidneys were failing.

Had bloods, xrays etc done but they could not find anything at all which could have caused it and have put it down to a side effect from the chemo and I was released with diazepam and co-dydramol and no assurance that thus was simply a one off.

I can’t describe how utterly terrified I am that this will happen again. I’ve cried since I came home as I just dint think I can deal with it if it should recur.

I’m drinking litres of fluids and I don’t eat processed food or drink alcohol.

Has anybody else experienced this?

I will be contacting my Macmillan nurse on Monday and will infirm the chemo professor when I return for my next session on 9th March.

Thanks in anticipation.

I’ve finished FEC (T next week) but never had anything like that. The hospital have given you a good check over, so try and relax. You’re drinking well, a couple of litres of water a day should be enough.

Hopefully you you are felling better tonight. Make sure you’re sleeping in a good position, I quite often get backache in bed. It is possible your back went into spasms and where it was made you think it was kidney related. I think you’re right to contact your Macmillan nurse though, you can’t be too careful. You could also phone your out of hours chemo line to see what they think might be going on, so you don’t have to wait until Monday.
