Lady GSOH seeking advice

Hi all

I’ll try to be brief with history

In Oct 2007 (thanks to Chris Steel on This Morning!) I went to GP with eczema on 1 nipple, referred to hospital, had mammo which showed 2 distinct white spots, consultantant said she was happy but radiology would probably recall me - a sentence repeated several times during consultation - after looking (no physical exam) and after looking at ultra sound image to name but 2.

Her parting words to me were that she was happy with things but I would probably be recalled, not to worry but she’d like to see me in 3 months whatever and then mentioned Paget’s

I was given some stronger steroid cream as GP had given me some which hadn’t really worked.

An anxious 2 week wait with no contact from hospital and as I was due smear asked nurse how long results took and she said a month.

Another waiting game with still no letter so started trying to find out. Eventually spoke to breast care nurse who rang me back and said there were 2 tiny benign lumps and no further tests needed.

Initially I was relieved but then I started wondering why consultant seemed convinced I’d be recalled, what were the 2 benign lumps and I also thought a biopsy was the definitive tool of diagnosis so how did anyone no for sure they were benign.

When the letter arrived it was 1 sentence long and said mammogram was clear and I wouldn’t need to be seen again (no mention of ultrasound or tiny benign lumps)

Anyway contrary to what the letter said as requested by consultant I went to follow up appointment in feb 2008 she looked said ok and that was it I did ask what white spots were and she sort of scanned my notes and said intranodular nodes I also asked why she seemd sure I’d be recalled and she said cos of new digital machine which wasn’t true as I’d had old method and then she said a team would have reviewed results.

Since then eczema comes and goes (only 1 breast) and in May this year I had a terrible hot burning sensation (in same breast) and when I put hand to it it felt like hot needle being pushed into nipple. Went to GP who found a sensitive spot where breast connects to rib which was in a line with nipple so that was why!. As there was no lump I didn’t need referring back to hospital!?

That breast has a continued pain (sort of ache) Recently I had an unrelated pain, took some Ibuprofen which treated what I took it for but the pain in my breast continued hence this post.

Part of me feels I’ve had the all clear accept it and move on but then the ongoing troubles in 1 breast and the doubt/mixed messages (in my mind!) over initial consultation doesn’t create peace of mind.

Any opinions/thoughts would be appreciated and hopefully I’ll be able to move on.

Love to all

Sandra

Hello Sandra. As you’re still having problems I would definitely go back and insist on a biopsy. ‘Intranodular nodes’ doesn’t make much sense - nodes inside nodes?! The tiny lumps probably are harmless, but you shouldn’t have to put up with unresolved symptoms, and a biopsy is the only way to be sure!

Hi Sandra,

Could I suggest that you give the helpline here a ring and have a chat? Calls to the helpline are free, 0808 800 6000 open M-F 9-5 and Sat 9-2.

Alternatively if you prefer, you could try the Ask the Nurse service, link below.

Hope you get some answers. Kind regards,

Just like to say thank you to the lady I spoke to on Friday afternoon and would like to suggest (if they don’t mind!) that a phone call to the help line may be of reassurance to those in need - I certainly felt more at ease and I know which way to go now.

BIG THANKS

Sandra
