Lapatinib or Herceptin?

Hi all,
Originally diag Oct 2008, recurrence Nov 2010 (one small lump)in neck. Lump removed and no sign (touchwood) of any other progression on scans so far.

I’m currently on Herceptin and capacitabine. Happily, have just found out (by phone) that I have been accepted for Lapatinib. Onc has told me to stop Herceptin. Thought I was meant to have both as they work in different ways. A bit confused.

Just wondered if anyone else in this situation? How long do you have lapatinib for? Any horrible side effects?

I am due to see Onc on Tues, so will get questions answered…but wondered if anyone could help meanwhile?
Thanks,
Gail

Hello Gail,

Brilliant news re Lapatinib.

I’m also replying to bump this back up the list of recent posts in the hope you’ll get some more replies.

Gosh. Lucky you. Sorry, a bit busy at the moment but suggest you look for the thread on lapatinib we started a few weeks ago for more info.

Briefly, lap+Hercep showed synergistic benefits/greater efficacy in trials and lapatinib crosses the blood brain barrier and Herceptin doesn’t. Please let us know how you get on. If it were me, I’d be sticking with the Herceptin…they might want you off of it if you have shown progression of mets on it, but you could cite some of the trials showing synergistic benefits. xxx
