LD recon pain across chest - HELP!!!

Hi

I have scoured the forums looking for help but not quite sure if what I’ve read fits what I’m experiencing.

I had my LD flap recon with becker implant done 2 weeks ago & am in enormous pain at night - if I lie on my back it’s excruciating for me to move. On my side is no fun because of the “pull” factor.

The pain I’m getting is near the cleavage area - sharp stabbing pains. It only tends to subside after being up for an hour or so & I get no other pain really from the op.

Is this nerve pain I am experiencing? Is this something that will settle down? I dread going to bed every night as I can’t get comfy - or move!

Hope someone can help

Hi,

I had something similar when I got home after my LD recon. It was so painful I wasn’t breathing properly,I could only take shallow breaths.I called my BCN who arranged for me to go in to get it checked.
The Dr started off saying it was all normal and just to up my painkillers, then he checked my back and said I had a seroma that could do with draining.I didn’t think the two could be connected, but once it was drained the pain vanished. They explained that the tissue that is now your new boob is still connected to nerves at the back and the fluid was pressing on these nerves causing pain at the front! Bizarre!
Give your BCN a call and get it checked, hopefully it will be easy fixed like mine.
Don’t suffer in silence,

PS when lying on your side at night try cuddling a teddy or one of those squigey bean cushions to support your new boob.

Thanks Dot

I had my seroma drained yesterday & suffered most of last night with the chest pain so assume that’s not the problem in my case - would make sense though.

Thanks for your help though as I’ve kind of forgotten all about the BCNs so it’s certainly jolted me into action to give them a call for help.

Thanks also for the tip about laying on my side - will try. I thought a bra would do it but problem is I now have 2 totally different cup sizes so no bra has been built to take on the job. Maybe there’s a marketing opportunity there for someone! Ha ha!

Hi,
Even if you have had the seroma drained,it may be something else is putting pressure on a nerve.Give your BCN a ring and see what they say,you shouldn’t have to put up with pain like that.

I wondered if someone could invent a bra that can be adjusted to fit odd boobs. How about a style that fastens at the front AND back so you would buy 2 hemi-bras!
Ok ,maybe a bit whacky!
Good luck with the pain, have you got a teddy to hug tonight?

Oh yes, my daughter has plenty I can choose from!

Will definately ring BCN. Think fluid’s already starting to build up again.
My whole armpit & back feeling v tight.

Thanks for your help, hope I don’t have the pain too much longer.

Hi Alison,

I hope you have had some reassurance from your BCN.

Just wanted to say that for about 2 and a bit weeks post my LD recon with implant I also had pain along the clevage side of my new boob when I lay on the opposite side and also found it uncomfortable/painful to lie on my back, as if I was being crushed. I didn’t seek any help as to be honest I thought it was my body trying to cope with the weight of this new hard boob which was also swollen from the surgery (I thought my skin would rip). It did settle however sleeping on my side did require a pillow under my knee for sometime and a wheat bag or teddy between my boobs to give my new boob some support. In fact I can’t get comfy now (6 weeks on) without either a hand or pillow between my boobs to give it a bit of support. I can’t wear any support right now due to having issues with my back wound but found it helped to wear a secret support top when I slept just to keep it in place a bit.

If the pain goes away and is regular then its probably nothing too serious. I had waves of pain every 5 minutes or so one night about 10 days post surgery and this was a secondary bleed. Suffice to say it was just the once and not every night so that’s probably not the case for you.

I also found that about every 5 to 6 days my back and shoulder blade felt very tight from fluid build up but was last drained 4 weeks post surgery (so only 3 times after drains out) and now its been 2 weeks and the fluid is minimal and doesn’t need draining.

Hope this helps, x
