Letrozole not reducing oestrogen

I have been on Letrozole for 4 months. I happened to have some other blood tests done recently and one came back that showed my oestrogen levels are good! I would have anticipated my oestrogen levels would be negligible by now. Has anyone had the experience of their Letrozole not working?

Hi es1968,

Thanks for posting.

It’s understandable that you’re worried that the letrozole might not be working after getting blood test results that show a normal level of oestrogen in your system.

Letrozole will usually supress oestrogen levels in the body within a few days of starting treatment. However, it can take several weeks or months for it to work fully. We wonder if you have spoken to your treatment team or GP about this blood test result. It’s important to let your treatment team know, as they will be best placed to discuss this blood test result with you.

There are some things that can interfere with how well letrozole works. This includes not being fully through the menopause yet, and taking drugs such as HRT or herbal supplements aimed at helping with menopausal symptoms. You can check if a herbal supplement or medicine is safe to take with your treatment team, GP or a specialist pharmacist.

If you are taking supplements, the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine runs a pharmacy and helpline with pharmacists specialising in complementary medicines that you can call.

If you haven’t done so already, you might like to have a look at some of our free online and face-to-face supportive services.
