I am having breast reconstruction surgery today. I have told I may have a scar from Center breast bone to nipple and will have an indentation after due to the location. I have 22mm DCIS. Is it possible to have the cut below the breast instead? Plus is it possible to have lipomodelling at a later date after radiotherapy? Is this available on the NHS. I am a single lady so am body conscious.
Hi inwimborne,
Thanks for posting your question about your breast surgery. The surgeon will try to minimise scarring and aim for the best cosmetic outcome, but won’t always be able to ‘hide’ the scar. Do talk to your treatment team or breast care nurse about how you are feeling. They will be able to explain how the scars will look and answer any questions you have about the surgery.
Lipomodelling is a process of transferring fat cells from one part of the body to the breast, and usually requires more than one procedure to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. It is available on the NHS after treatment has finished, you can discuss if this is an option for you with your treatment team.
Body changes after treatment can affect the way you feel, and you’re not alone in feeling body conscious. Addressing your concerns is an important part of your care and you can talk to your breast care nurse about this. You can also speak to a nurse on our helpline, or you might find speaking to someone who has been through a similar experience helpful via our Someone Like Me service.
Do call our helpline if you would like to talk this through or have any further questions. The helpline team have time to listen to your concerns, talk things through and signpost you to more support and information.
