liver secondaries, anyone know what the symptoms are

Hi, I had bc three and half years ago. Had a mastectomy, 4 Fec, radiotherpay, 4 taxotere, and a year of herceptin. What a long haul that was…

Recently I have been feeling unwell, generally tired and hardly any appetite, and nausea a lot of the time. I have lost a stone in weight in about 2 months. Had to go and buy new clothes which was a big trial, not, hahaha.

I did go to my gp and after two lots of blood tests there is abnormalities in my liver test result - dont really know what this means nor did my gp I dont think. Anyway she referred me back to the breast clinic and I am now waiting on a CT scan. The consultant only said that between the two blood tests the second one had got worse regarding the liver.

I am just wondering if there are any ladies out there who have secondary cancer in the liver and if they can remember what their symptoms were. I am trying hard not to think the worst but I want to prepare myself for it anyway.

Many thanks for reading this post, and best wishes to you all.

Hi kateybelu

So sorry you are feeling unwell. I don’t have secondaries in my liver but know other women who do. Your symptoms could be secondaries in your liver or could be another problem. Some women have the symptoms you describe, others don’t.

Waiting for tests and results is hard. If you get bad news there is a lot of support in these forums and good news stories of women who have had liver mets for several years and are doing well on various treatments.

very best wishes

Jane

Hi kateybelu,

I’m sorry to read you have worries about your liver - and I do hope they turn out to be unfounded. However, in answer to some of your queries, they symptoms you describe could be attributed to liver health problems though not necessarily. I have had liver mets for four years now, have never lost any weight or suffered appetite problems because of them, have never felt nauseous and just buy new clothes for the hell of it.

It does sound as though blood tests are showing changes in the levels of enzymes in your liver beyond the ranges of normal activity which may point to other problems going on. It sounds as though these changes are not stabilizing which, to me, indicates they should be checked out ASAP. I am not a liver expert, but I would hope there may be many reasons for these changes.

Best wishes and I hope it turns out OK for you.

I can so understand your worry and think it is best to follow the CT route so that you can either rule out liver mets, or get on with a treatment plan.

I had NO symptoms of liver mets, and it turns out I had loads of the little uggers - one 3cm big!

Abnormal liver function tests can be a sign of other things, apart from mets. Gallstones, for example, can cause abnormal readings, loss of appetite etc.

Hope you get some answers soon.

Deirdre

Hi,
another liver met sufferer here. I did not have sickness but did feel tired mid afternoon and had the feeling that everything was blurring as if in a dream. Sometimes so bad I felt I would pass out, also my tummy swelled as if pregnant.
As the others have said waiting is the hard part as you tend to think all sorts of nasty things are going on inside you! I hope the scan proves that it is not the reoccurence of b.c.
We are here if needed lets just hope you wont need us.

Hi Katiebelu, I can understand what you are feeling at the moment. I’ve had an abnormal liver test just last wk and have an appointment with a specialist next week, and an mri I think, scary! I do know from a previous scan that my gallbladder is full of stones and I’ve had real bad 'attacks’starting with an indigestion feeling and after a while I began to feel I was heading for a heart attack!!! Then felt fine the next day. I know the liver function test can be down to other things and may well be my gallstones as my Dr says all signs point to it however once you’ve had bc it’s so hard isn’t it to put reoccurence out of your mind? I hope all turns out well for you.

Many thanks for your replies - once youv had bc you tend to get paranoid which is only natural I suppose. Before BC (I was 37) I had been to the doctors maybe 3 times in my life, god how things changed then, now I am on first name terms with my gp and half the staff at the local hospital, lol.

Hoping I wont have to wait too long for the scan but the consultant did say he would get it arranged as soon as possible. Thats really hard to deal with too, all the waiting for appointments, then more waiting for results, that def stresses people out, esp people like me with no patience in the first place…

thanks again X
