loose women

I’m sat here watching loose woman, they are talking about breast cancer. Coleen Nolan has just said that her sister Bernie had had the gene test, and is not carrying either of the faulty braca genes.
How on earth has she had her results back so quick? I had mine done at St Marys in manchester, on the 1st of June, and was told it can take upto 6 months. Does it all come down to money?

watching it myself, was wondering the same question.

That has just bugged me abit. I feel like my life is on hold until i get the results. Celebs seem to get very quick results, and all clears, easy treatment, have we had a different illness?
sharon x (sorry just feeling that way out today!!)

Never apologise for your feelings, I would love a celeb tell the truth re chemo ie the vomiting, diarrheoa etc rather than saying they were cured the week after. So you have a right to feeling peeved

sharon69gog,

Didn’t see the programme (never watch it) but would have felt aggrieved too about the genetic testing time. My mum and I were both tested May 9th 2009 by St Marys at their Preston clinic and were told it would be at least 12 months but more likely 18 months or more…Rang this May to update them with some info and they said what a co-incidence I’d rung as they had just got my file out to review/re-file it for NEXT year and that they’d update my file, discuss with the consultant and get back to me with an update. Still waiting. I don’t have kids so the genetic thing is really from the point of view of ‘interest’ for me with the possible implication of a prophylatic mx and likelihood of ovarian cancer.

Suppose these things take time and it’s the peril of not being a celeb !

I do remember reading that 2 of the other sisters have had bc.
It is possible that she had been tested prior to her diagnosis…(she says hopefully !!!)

Hi,

Yep Julie, suppose she may well have been tested earlier on. I too remember that 2 of the sisters have had bc within the last few years and not sure that others in the family haven’t been affected too. They may have a gene they’re not testing for at the mo - that’s what they did tell us (yes, it looks like there is a genetic link but unlikely to be brca1 or 2).

Hi
I believe the Nolan girls were being tested for the BRCA 1/2 mutation. As for the time in testing, my sister was tested first, this took 4months which was quicker than she was told to expect. as she was positive I was tested and got my result in 18 days. My brother, sister and niece had theirs back in 4 weeks

I was told a year after my test that they hadn’t found either BRCA 1 or 2 gene mutation, but that they were keeping my sample incase they find another gene mutation that they don’t yet know about.

I was told that a positive test could be found quickly, if it was discovered early in the process of searching through all of the chromosomes etc, but it would take a year to search through them all. So not hearing would be more likely to be good news! Sorry if this sounds confused I know what I mean! but haven’t expressed it very well!)

as they are celebs they maybe went private and went directly to myriad.

however there is a genetic research programme going on for families with 3 cases of breast cancer… this is actually looking for new genes that may cause breast cancer but in order to do that it looks at the main brca 1 & 2 mutations to rule them out… this is a long process and can take anything from 9 to 24 months… if you have been kept waiting this long it may be worth speaking to your unit to find out if this is the case… or at least chase it up.

if you meet certain criteria for genetic testing you will be offered a mutation search which blood will be sent off to the labs and not the research trial… it is generally around 4-6 months, but can be up to 12 months.

if a gene mutation is found they can then offer predictive testing to other family members who may want to be tested and this looks at the specific mutation and takes around 4-6 weeks.

it may vary slightly up and down the country but unless your in a research trial i wouldnt have thought it should be taking more than 12 months… would maybe be inclined to chase them after about 6 months.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I’m a bit more chilled today, Just feel like all we are doing is waiting for everything!!!
Sharon

hi, before i developed bc there was history in both sides of my family but due to the nature and age no testing could be done until i got the dreaded bc. i wanted to get tested and although had family history i was the first to be tested, knew i would have brca1 for some reason but got my results in about 2 months and mam and dad after that in about 1 month and rest of family shortly after - and i do live in back of beyound x

Hi everyone, I dunno whether this will perhaps answer your question/help in any way, here goes:

I had BRCA1 & 2 test back in 2003, I was told at the time that I could get the results back fairly quickly if they found the faulty gene in one of the common “hotspots”, but if it wasn’t there, then it would take approx 12 months cos it’s like “looking for a single spelling mistake in a telephone directory”. So it may well be that the Nolan sister/s results were in the common hotspot category hence getting the results quickly.

Incidentally, my test results came back after either 11 or 13 months (can’t remember which now - tis my memory) and I was negative to both. However, like another lady has said they will keep a sample of my blood for if they discover another type of faulty gene in the future.

hi ladies hope you’s dont mind me butting in here, i havent been on here for ages but wanted to say i got tester for brca2 and got positive result within 4 weeks. just wish everyone only had to wait that amount of time as it’s so difficult…x
