Lump under my breast after having a mastectomy

Ive just come out of hospital after having a mastectomy and an expander put in. Last night I found a lump underneath my breast with the expander in. Could this be fluid or a muscle? It freaked out out last night but my partner reassured me it was noting and I cant get hold of my nurse to ask her.

Hi Emelf

It is not likely to be anything sinister so soon out of hospital. It is most likely fluid from all the bruising and bashing you have been through. I had lumps and bumps galore after my surgery (not mastectomy). You should get it checked you are worried - your GP will be able to tell if its just post op swelling. Why not ring the helpline on this site - they should put your mind at rest

Hi Emelf

I understand you must be concerned especially as you cannot contact your nurse. It might help if you give our helpline a ring. The Helpline is staffed by experienced nurses and specially trained workers with a personal or professional experience of breast cancer, and are able to offer information and support on any aspect of breast cancer or breast health - do feel free to give them a ring.

Hi Emelf,

I had an expander implant in June, '08 - could the lump you are feeling be the port (which is usually underneath your breast) and which your surgeon will use to administer the saline to increase the size of the implant. Just a thought… Jacqui x

Thats what I wondered and freaked out because I thought it may have slipped down. Its a small but long lump to the left near my side.

It definitely sounds like it is the port, but ask your consultant about it when you next see him to put your mind at rest. All the best, Jacqui

Apparently its not the port. Went to my gp n they think it might be blood or fluid. Dont know for sure until my post op tho.
