Lumpectomy and lymph node removal

Hi

I was told when first diagnosed with breast cancer that I would need a mastectomy and lymph node removal. my tumour was quite large and I have stage 3. After a good response to chemo my tumour is now quite small and my consultant has decided I only need a lumpectomy but still need to have my lymph nodes removed as the needle biopsy was positive to cancer. I am a bit concerned as was told I had orange peel skin, slight swelling and redness round my nipple although it seems to have gone now. Is this normal for the chemo to have also acted on these as well as the tumour. My breast cancer nurse said it was normal but I am still worried and that may be I should still be having a mastectomy. Has anyone else had anything similar? My surgery is on 8th September.
