Hi I’m new to this forum I had my lumpectomy at the end of March and I’m waiting to see the consultant with the results I’ve been told there is a delay in histology results at Maidstone hospital at the moment and it’s unlikely I will see the consultant now until after Easter. When I do eventually see the consultant will I be on tablets as I’ve been told I will have to take them or do i have radiotherapy first then tablets. Up until now things have progressed relatively quickly from diagnosis to treatment but I’m now getting a bit stressed with the wait. Also since being told I have breast cancer to the procedure I’ve carried on as normal and just taken things in my stride but now I’m having good and bad days is that normal.
Hi @smurphy
I had four weeks between surgery (a year ago to the day!) and my results. Even though I managed to mainly carry on as normal the worry did creep in at times. Perfectly normal and to be expected, it’s a difficult time. I wasn’t prescribed hormone therapy at this appointment, but a few weeks later when I saw the oncologist (one and only time). I started taking tamoxifen the day it was prescribed which was before radiotherapy.
Best of luck with everything. x
Hello @smurphy
Welcome to the forum.
I can very much relate to how you are feeling at the moment, my treatment followed much the same path.
It is nearly four years since my diagnosis treatment and I can’t remember the exact timescales however I can remember being very keen to get my treatment “over and with” asap, however I came to realise that whilst the timescales in treatment don’t always meet our wishes or what we are initially told, they don’t always meet our expectations.
Hopefully your results appointment will be good news: once what has been removed has been analysed by the lab, you will be told what “margins” they have achieved with the surgery. “Clear margins” will mean all the tissue around the tumour is clear of cancer cells, which is really good news. However depending on where your tumour was situated, this may not have been possible, in which case they may need to change the plan.
I was fortunate enough to be told they’d got “clear margins” and also that my lymph nodes were clear so my plan didn’t need to change which meant my plan continued with a course of radiotherapy and I’m now on the hormone tablets for five years. However there was a delay in my starting my tablets as there was some confusion about which tablets I should take, but from everything I’ve read, I don’t believe I’ve got any reason to worry about the delay in starting the hormone tablets
Keeping my fingers crossed for you for your results and your further treatment

Take comfort in that the most effective treatment for it is the surgery that takes it away. If you looked on Predict ( which is too early to use before results are known, so I dont recommend it yet) the biggest chunk making the difference to survival, whatever the cancer, is always the surgery, by a long way, which you have already had. Good luck with your results, I got given tamoxifen in my results meeting, it’s not unusual to be asked to start straight away - I gave it 2 days, as I was on my period at the time, which is when hormones are lowest, then started taking them when hormones would be on the rise.
