lymph node biopsy

Hi all

New here … I just got back from hospital where I had mammogram and ultra sound. They confirmed lump is suspicious and did two biopsies of the breast but also three of lymph nodes. They also wanted biopsy of nodes under my other arm but were unable to do this because skin is broken so I have to go back for a CT scan. I will get results on 2nd or 3rd June which is such a long time to wait.

My question is whether it is standard procedure to take lymph node biopsies at this initial appointment or does it signify that they have concerns?

The doctor did give me a chance to ask questions but I just wanted to get out of there and have a mini-breakdown in the car., now I’m wishing I had asked.

Hi Dancing_Nancy

Welcome to the forums, it sounds like you’re having a pretty tough time at the moment.  I’m sure some of the other users will be a long soon to offer you their knowledge and experience.  In the meantime you might find it helpful to talk things through with a member of staff on the helpline. Here you can share your thoughts and concerns with someone who will offer you a listening ear as well as emotional support and practical information.  The number to call is 0808 800 6000 and lines are open Monday to Friday 9 to 5pm and Saturday 10 to 2pm.

Hi Nancy,

before I was diagnosed in 2012, they did an ultra sound and biopsied my lump, then the US showed a suspicious lymph node which she also biopsied. But she did comment that she didn’t like the look of it beforehand. The problem is, each hospital does things differently. I have known some have the lymph nodes biopsied to find they were clear, while others didn’t have them biopsied until surgery, when they had a sentinal node biopsy under anaesthetic. So it is difficult to say whether your biopsies were standard or not. I’m sure your CT scan will give you the answer.

Take care
