Mammogram after Mastectomy

What check ups do they do after a mastectomy? Can they do a mammogram on a non-existant breast. I ask because my Mum’s cancer has returned both in the area where her breast was removed 12 years ago, and in her remaining breast.

I was wondering that. I had mastectomy and have an implant. I am due my first Mammogram in June and the x ray form definetly said bilateral mammogram??? I was just going to wait and see what happens at the appointment. Surely my implant will explode like a huge zit…

How do you know that the cancer has returned on the mastectomy side? Was it a mammogram that picked it up in her remaining breast?

Best Wishes to your mum

Thanks for your reply and your good wishes. No, unfortunately my Mum has not been having mammograms, something I did not realise. The Consultant has confirmed BC in the remaining breast and in the scar line of her mastectomy. It was only picked up by her GP because she went to him with another minor complaint and he saw her breast area and realised what was going on. It just made me curious as to if this might have been detected in her scar area if she had attended her mammogram appointments. It certainly would have been picked up in her remaining breast. It makes me worry for myself too as I had BC 4½ years ago, but I will continue to have my checks and mammograms and anything else that is offered. My poor Mum has almost certainly left it too late, if only I had known.
