Mammogram & Ultrasound Scores

Good morning,

I had my breast clinic appointment last week and am waiting for the biopsy results. I was told the lump is scored M5 and U5 and the consultant said it’s 90% likely to be cancer.

This website defines M5 and U5 as cancer so I’m a little confused as to whether there’s a 10% chance it’s not cancer or if the consultant is just being extra cautious in case of a rare chance it’s not cancer.

Is your definition absolute or is there ever any doubt with an M5 / U5 score?

Thank you.

Hi springer77

Thank you for posting your question.

It’s understandable that you’d like to know if the M5/U5 score means someone definitely has breast cancer. These scores are based on how the lump looks on mammogram and ultrasound, but even if the lump looks like it is breast cancer, it’s not possible to say for sure without the results of a biopsy. This may be why the consultant described it as 90%.

Being told the lump is likely to be breast cancer, and waiting for biopsy results can be a worrying time. You can call the breast unit to speak to a breast care nurse if you have questions and about how you are feeling. They won’t be able to give any results over the phone but can discuss the scan results you have.
