Mammograms I dont know whether anyone else read the article int he Daily mail about mammograms.

Very worrying that they say if your under 40 and have mammograms and carry the gene for BC you have a really high chance of it causing it.
Also even if you dont carry the gene mamograms are dangerous in women under40 leading to a higher chance of BC.

Thats just great isnt it.

I think its best not to read anything in the Daily Mail, I wish my husband wouldnt buy it as I often end up flicking through it and getting worried. They really love breast cancer articles, and they have such a downer on women. Our bc nurse said she thinks they make all the stuff on bc up!! I tend to agree with her.

read something else As far as I can tell the Daily Mail is a tabloid that is interested in selling papers by publishing articles that are alarmist and without proper research. Please don’t buy that paper or read the articles. Be kind to yourself and get your research from respected sources.

This is what the story actually said Here is the blurb from Reuters Health, courtesy of the US National Institutes of Health. Reuters is good at reporting things sans spin. It’s a good way of checking what stories on breast cancer actually say, since its not just the Daily Mail that puts heavy spin on such things:

The study actually looked at the exposure of BRCA1/2 carriers to chest x-rays, not mammography per se. The highest risk was for women who had chest x-rays before the age of 20, when mammograms are never done. Even the scientists involved don’t believe that the practice of giving BRCA carriers mammograms in their late thirties should be changed solely on the basis of the study.

I remember a male comedian joking that the perfect Daily Mail headline would be house price worries over asylum seeker breast cancer scare. Too true.

English female students at bottom of class for knowledge of A very interesting study, led by Cancer Research UK, showing that young women are completely unaware that lack of exercise, regular alcohol consumption and obesity are well-known risk factors for breast cancer. Women in all of the nations surveyed did very badly, but England did the worst.

Of course, before anyone writes in, there are thin tee-total exercise fanatics who get breast cancer, just as there are non-smokers who get lung cancer. And for pre-menopausal breast cancer, thinness is actually a risk factor, but most BC is post-menopausal. However, these factors do worsen the odds in general.

I am particularly concerned that students don’t know the link between alcohol consumption and breast cancer, since they seem to be drinking more and more each year. One of my male students died just six years after graduation because of stomach cancer and I can’t help but wonder whether excess drink played a role.
