Hi there, I’m new to the forums but am struggling to come to terms with my mums recent news. Mum had a mastectomy less than three months ago and is undergoing chemo at the minute. She was told yesterday there is a hot spot on her hip but we won’t know much else until she finishes chemo in sep and they scan her again. I Am so worried, because this has spread so quickly is there less they can do
Hi MofT
I can understand your worries for your Mum afer going through the intial diagnosis and now treatments. Bone metastices seem to be able to be treated well so hoping she gets to having treatment soon - I had Zometa alongside my chemo as IV (just another bag of drugs that went through the cannula in about 15mins) and am now on tablets each day (Bondronat) to control the bones. There’s a thread called “bone mets” so do have a look at that - lots of reassuring stories that have kept me positive and will hopefully help you and your family too.
Hope this helps a bit
Fran

Thanks Lucy and Fran, I’m just so worried and probably should stop trying to investigate to much as it’s not all good stories or helpful like you. I will go on the bone mets thread now as well .
Hi Mammy
I’m sorry to hear you have this extra worry. I just wanted to check whether it has been confirmed by another scan (CT or MRI) that the hot spot is a definitely a secondary? Things like arthritis can show as hot spots on bone scans, particularly in joints like the hip - so it is usually necessary to have a second different type of scan to confirm bone mets. Did she have an earlier bone scan at original diagnosis to compare against? A new hot spot that wasn’t there 3 months ago would indeed be suspicious. If it hasn’t been confirmed, I would advise her to push for a CT or MRI scan now and not wait until September, because it affects treatment options.

Hi finty, mum had ct, mri and then a bone scan before she started chemo, they told her yesterday they were 90perent sure it was secondary but are keeping chemo and meds same until she finishes her chemo in September.
Ok, it sounds like they have been very thorough. But although a secondary diagnosis is very scary, there are many of us doing very well with bone mets. I was dx’d 2 years ago and am now feeling extremely well - in fact, except for some joint stiffness, in many ways better than I was before dx. Do check out the bone mets thread - you will find many of us in a similar position.
