Massage

I have been told that it once you’ve had breast cancer you can only have a massage done by a specially trained person. Does anybody know why this is? What can go wrong? Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Hello,as I understand it, I was advised, whilst on Chemotherapy, only to have a massage by someone specialy trained as it needs to be very gentle and certain essential oils can interfere with the drugs. Try speaking to your BC nurse to ask if massages are available through your hospital. I attended a day hospice when I was on chemo and had complemantary therapies there. worth a try.

hi

i think thats only if you’ve had lymph node removal or are on chemo. Vigorous massage can cause lymphoedema, so you can have a massage but, leave that area out. And obviously you,ve got to be fully healed.
If you ask at your hospital, they usually have a range of safe complimentary therapys open to you for free.

Hi thunderstorm

You may find the BCC publication about complementary therapies helpful to read, you can do so via this link:

Hi I too had aromatherapy massages at the MacMillan centre where my Onc is based. I had them during chemo and also after WLE and ANC (when I could lie on my front again)Had some massages on hols too but I had checked with BCC helpline first and as long as it is a gentle massage and certain oils are not used it is said to be OK.You could have your affected arm left out of massage if you like. On hols they liked to do an exfoliation a few days before but I bypassed that as to 'rough’Hope you can find a therapist the massages were lovely. Jackie
