Hello everyone, I am having a mastectomy next Wednesday, the surgeon said he was going to do a lumpectomy but would like me to have an MRI scan to see how much to take, but I had to cancel it I know I am a wimp but I cant cope with feeling shut in they told me it would be an hour long scan as the machine is a slow one, well I got in such a panic I made my self sick so rung the BC nurse and said I would rather have the mastectomy and she cancelled the scan, I was wondering what to expect when I have had the surgery roughly how long is the stay in hospital and how will it be moving about and things any advice will be very helpful, sorry to rattle on but am a bit nervous,

Hi Celia
Sorry to hear you’re having a mx. Are you having your lymph nodes removed too? I had a mx and lymph clearance 6 weeks ago. I’m still stiff but not sore. I was in hospital overnight and went home with a drain in, which remained for a week - although if you’re not having lymph clearance you probably won’t have a drain.
Most important thing is to do the exercises they prescribe, even though it hurts at first.
It isn’t pleasant but I didn’t find the surgery that bad. I certainly wasn’t in that much pain after - the nurses kept trying to give me morphine and I honestly didn’t need it. You’ll wake up with a local anaesthetic anyway, so it’s not too much of a shock and there are plenty of options to control the pain, if you have much.
Good luck. xxxx Jane
Hello Jane thanks for your reply I am having a sentinal node biopsy done and the bc nurse said if they found anything I would have to go in for them doing after,
