Medications to help with hot flushes when on Letrozole

Hi

I had to stop HRT when my breast cancer was found to be oestrogen and progesterone +. The hot flushes returned and when I started on the Letrozole five months ago they increased.

I tried venlafaxine but found quite quickly that it didn’t agree with me.

I then tried Oxybutynin which did help but after 5 weeks the dry mouth, dry eyes not sweating and not producing saliva to be very unpleasant so i stopped. I was advised to try Clonidine but when i spoke with my GP, he wanted me to try Paroxetine. I have no knowledge of this drug and want to ask if it is ok to try it when on Letrozole please? I understand it can increase anxiety, take about two weeks to get used to it and I’m Not too keen on the thought of antidepressants

Also

Is there any known reason why I couldn’t have had the Clonidine instead? I do understand this is a blood pressure medication.

Thank you

Hi jaynealis,

Thank you for your post. It is understandable you ask about medication to help manage the hot flushes you are experiencing whilst on Letrozole.

Some antidepressant drugs like Paroxetine can help reduce hot flushes for some women. Antidepressants can be prescribed in a lower dose to help with hot flushes than when prescribed for depression, and so you are unlikely to have an antidepressant effect.

As you mentioned, Clonidine which is normally used to treat high blood pressure can also be used for managing hot flushes and may be effective for some women.

You may find it helpful to contact your breast care nurse or treatment team about and speak to them about your concerns. They can talk you through other ways to manage your hot flushes, like complimentary therapy or cognitive behavioural therapy. You could also ask to be referred to see a menopause specialist and talk through the side effects you are experiencing since stopping HRT.
