Hi All,

I am new to all of this!

I have undergone a lumpectomy and was due to start radiotherapy in a few weeks, today my onc has told me due to my age (26) chemotherapy is going to give me a far better chance of keeping the cancer away and I was wondering if anyone has indergone the MM course of chemo?

I have read a little however I have no idea what to expect from the treatment course and the side affects!

hi there new to this never done this befour i have had a lumpectomy in my right breast about 7 monthes ago have had cemo and radio and am now on tamo and just sarted herceptin had it 2 time s now feel ok just want to chat to other people in the same boat as me who as breast cancer well hope u r all well by for now

Hiya x-maria,
I just saw your post and am in a similar boat. I had a lumpectomy in my right breast in June and am currently having chemo, with the last treatment to go in October. I’m due to have radiotherapy and then herceptin and tamo too. I haven’t met many people who are on both and wondered how it was going? I’m 28 and am finding it all a bit difficult, particularly at the later stages of the chemo. Hope you all are managing ok xx

Hi I’m 24 and was diagnosed in May at the age of 23. Have been through a lot since then. Had a lumpectomy on the right breast in June. Then was told that before I could start chemo I would need IVF (as I have no children yet). That was the most devastating part for me as having a child was the next step for me and my husband who have now only been married for 2 years. Had IVF and was told that it was unsuccessful and I was gutted. I then had another attempt with the IVF and found another lump in my right breast just 3 months after my previous operation!
Thankfully my second ivf attempt was successful and have had some embryos frozen. Two days after my second egg collection operation I had a mastectomy on the right side. Now exactly 3 weeks after surgery I am sitting here worrying about chemo which I will start very soon. Had an appointment with my oncologist today and they are going to get me a date for my first chemo session. I have been told that I need chemo because I’m young and its mainly as a precaution in case there are any cancerous cells lurking around after surgery. I will then go on to have radiotherapy. I’m dreading it but at the same time I just want to get it over with and get on with my life. I want to go back to work (have been off since May) and more importantly I want to start a family. I just want normality and to get back into a routine as I’m bored at home! I’m feeling isolated at this stage and would like to speak to other younger women like me in a similar situation for reassurance. Maybe someone here has come out at the other end and could tell me about their experience? Or maybe someone out there is at the same stage as me (about to start chemo)? I just need some hope

Hi kiz

You’ve come to the right place for support as the many informed users of this site have a wealth of information and experience between them.

While you are waiting for replies could I suggest that you give our free helpline a ring on 0808 800 6000 and have a confidential chat with one of the breast care nurses who are here to support you through this, lines are open to Monday to Friday 9.00 – 5.00 and Saturday 9.00 – 2.00.

kind regards
June, moderator

Hi Kiz

I’m not at the same stage as you and was a little bit older when diagnosed (29). I’m really glad you managed to get your eggs frozen prior to starting chemo, I tried to do this and my oncologist recommended that I didn’t. When I started chemo all I wanted was some kind of hope, I’m now 2 years 4 mths out of surgery and next week will be finished chemo 2 years, had radio, herceptin and on tamox, and thankfully I’m still NED (no evidence of disease). You have everything to hope for, don’t let this disease rob you of hope. Chemo can be rough but it is doable, I really wish you all the very best for every stage of treatment.

I am 41 and was diagnosed with a grade 3 tumour on Wednesday. I thought I would have surgery straight off but it’s six months of chemo first. Slowly making sense of all this. Two days later it’s a little more bearable especially now the children know!! I still feel isolated and see the oncologist Tuesday. Love to hear off othersxx

Maz

I’m so sorry about your diagnosis. I’m 42 with grade 3 invasive ductal, diagnosed 7/9/09. I’ve had WLE first and now awaiting trip to oncologists.

Hi Maz7, i am also having chemo before surgery, i think they seem to do it that way when the tumour is over a certain size. Mine was 8cm. So far i have had 5 cycles an have 3 left to do. How many are you having and do you know what you are having?
hope it goes well
take care

Hi I’m 26 and was diagnosed in feb aged 25. Had a mastectomy in march then chemo and just finished radiotherpay, kept positive and strong throughout. I have been promoting breast cancer awareness by doing magazines newspapers, tv too and now model for a specialist bra company. Most people assume that its only older women who are diagnosed with breast cancer, nice to come on here and meet younger people!!!

Hey ladies I just want to say that I have started chemo and its not all that bad. Had my 2nd session yesterday feel a lot better now I know what to expect. Have 4 sessions left will be half way though at the end of this month. Lost the majority of my hair last week and it wasn’t all that bad. I actually managed to have a bit of a laugh when my husband took the scissors to my hair and gave me a terrible cut to get rid of excess hair! Thats the last time I will be letting him loose with a pair of scissors! I feel comfortable wearing a scarf at home and I wear my wig when I leave the house. My wig is great I wear it with pride! At first you feel paranoid as if eveyone is aware and is staring at you but then you realise thats not the case at all. I have had many compliments about it! Have a bit of sickness and side effects do get me down but only for the first few days and after that I’m back to myself. So if you are starting chemo try not to worry too much or let it take over your life. Just remember that its there to help you in the long run although it may be hard to believe right now! Best of luck to all the ladies on here keep smiling xxxx

I start chemo next week and was pleased to read that’s it’s not that bad. Three weeks ago I had a L breast mastectomy and I am recovering well but was worried about the chemo. I’ve been very positive about the whole ordeal and hopefully chemo will be a breeze!! My two daughters are looking forward to choosing hats wigs and scarves if the need arises. I just hope my christmas dinner tastes good !!
