Message Jane RA and Christine MH re: diet Hi girls. I’ve just read you posts on a thread below about low fat diet (Jane) and flaxseed and ER+ cancer and phytooestrogens (Christine). It’s nice to see I’m not the only one trying to find evidence for all this diet stuff. I’ve got a couple of questions:

1: I’m ER+ and PR+ and my onc told me there was evidence that low fat diet helps to prevent recurrence, and also told me to get my BMI down to 25 (fat chance - excuse the pun - on that). Have you got a link for the research that shows low fat diets only work for ER- and PR-?

2: Similar for the flaxseed being bad for Er+ cancers. I’ve only read a couple of abstracts on Pub Med that seem to suggest flaxseed shrinks ER+ tumours

I was gonna go on the Budwig diet after chemo, but somehow I just can’t bring myself to give up all chocolate and butter!!

Cheers
Moley

Hi Moley I got my info. off the Susan Love website (USA leading cancer writer.).
Link is:

www.susanlovemd.org/community/flashes/hotflash060509.htm

I printed off an article from this link in Nov 2005 so hope it still works!

I like to keep up with evidence on everything to do with cancer cause there’s so much claptrap about cancer and so much non evidence based speculation… but all bits of evidence are usually that…just bits…and the bits can be contradictory.

…so at a personal level I don’t do amything much to adjust my lifestyle…I take the view that either I’ll get a recurrence or I won’t…and in the present state of knowledge there’s not much I can do about that but hope I continue to fall on the right side of the stats.

Yes I try to eat ordinarily healthiy because that way my general health is probably better and use olive oil cause I like olive oil…otherwise good food is one of my pleasures and I don’t think what I eat will make any difference to my cancer

best wishes

Jane

Thanks Jane I agree with you about the recurrence thing. I heard a doc on the radio (can’t remember what programme - memory rubbish since chemo) saying something along the lines of …it was all very well to talk about preventative diets but once you’ve got/had cancer then a lot of these food things are like shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.

Actually now I remember the doc was talking about cancer and sugar and the dodgy idea that you should avoid sugar as cancers use sugar to grow.

I’m pinning a lot of my hopes on, if mine comes back, there may be even better treatments - as new treatments seem to be coming along often…

And the right side of the stats
