Misdiagnosis, complaints, litigation etc.

I feel that this could be helpful too.

I can see that for BCC to include such a thread it must be done right - so I will be interested in your decision, either way.

Please, Moderator, will you state the reasons if you decide against -I ask because I think it important to help users including myself to be aware of the implications of such a thing, not because I am asking you in an adversarial way to justify yourselves; I suppose if you do decide to try it there will have to be ground rules, the most obvious of which that comes to mind might be naming no names, but I guess there will be less obvious ones too - so I await your decision with interest.

Thanks everyone for your feedback.

It would be really useful to get your thoughts on what you *would* like to use the topic for. You’re right, snowwhite, in that we’re thinking there would need to be some ground rules, but we’d also like to give people some idea of the kind of support or information they might find in the thread, what sort of experiences people are sharing here etc.

Something like… “this is a place where you can share experiences about… you can ask other forum users about…”

The ground rules would most likely be around naming healthcare professionals, but also about providing anything that might be seen as legal advice. I’d be interested to hear if anyone had any other ideas for ground rules which would keep the thread on-topic, relevant and helpful.

i went to see a gp and was told that my lump was just a fibronma and she didnt even log me down as seeing her and was abrupt with me for wasting her time my hubby took me the doc so i no i went i remember the doctor but havent got proper date i believe it was between august and sep 2008 by the time march 2009 i had a 7cm ILBC and 5 lymph nodes effected what makes me really mad is doctor is saying i never went and i cant do nothing about it

Dear Debsteph

Could you not ask to see a list of all the appointments made over that period? The first GP I consulted with my breast cancer concerns (2001, four years before my BC was picked up) did not write down the breast cancer part of my consultation. I asked for a mammogram (my way of asking for specialist investigation)at all three consultations I had with regards to my breast concerns. They did not write this down and are now denying I asked. It’s amazing what they will deny when things go wrong.

Best of luck.

Jeannie

Hi Leah,
I think it would be useful to have info/guidance (even if it is just
pointing one to other web sites) on expected waiting times for various procedures, info on how to go about changing ones hospital/consultant, and and info on how to make a complaint (for example about ones PCT). Also info on how to obtain copies of ones notes would be a good idea.
cheers
caroline

To make a complaint phone your surgery and first speak to the practice manager they will be able to tell you what you need to do, you can reqwuest to see your notes from your gp normally in writing to the practice manager who will arrange for you to see them.
If your gp’s practice does not answer your query/ complaint to your satisfaction then there is the medical and parliamentary ombudsman who mediate to resolve issues.
You can also see your hosp notes by contacting your hosp patients services they will give you the forms to fill in for access.
Hope this helps.

Has a decision been made yet if there is coing to be a actual forum etc for misdiagnosis. This seems to have been going on for quite some time now and still no decision.

Kind regards

Ann

I’m sorry it’s taking a long time to get a decision. I am currently waiting for input from someone else. I am still very much on the case and hope to be able to get back to you one way or the other soon.

Thank you for your patience.
Leah

Hello everyone

I’m pleased to be able to say (finally) that we do now have a new topic.

Called “Standards in diagnosis and care”, it can be found here (breastcancercare.org.uk/forum/standards-in-diagnosis-and-care-f167.html) - under ‘treatment and side effects’.

A couple of things to note:

  • This area will be premoderated. This means that all posts will need to be approved by a moderator before going live. This is mostly to make sure that our policy of not identifying healthcare professionals in the public forum is adhered to. This policy is in place to protect both forum users and Breast Cancer Care from accusations of defamation. We may review this decision after the topic has been running for a while. In the meantime, if you have any comments about it, please email <script type=“text/javascript”>eval(unescape(‘%64%6f%63%75%6d%65%6e%74%2e%77%72%69%74%65%28%27%3c%61%20%68%72%65%66%3d%22%6d%61%69%6c%74%6f%3a%6d%6f%64%65%72%61%74%6f%72%40%62%72%65%61%73%74%63%61%6e%63%65%72%63%61%72%65%2e%6f%72%67%2e%75%6b%22%3e%6d%6f%64%65%72%61%74%6f%72%40%62%72%65%61%73%74%63%61%6e%63%65%72%63%61%72%65%2e%6f%72%67%2e%75%6b%3c%2f%61%3e%27%29%3b’))</script>.

  • Taking into account some of your comments, this is how I’ve explained what this area is for:

“This topic is to help people find support and information about standards in care and diagnosis. For example, you might share information about what you can expect (perhaps in terms of waiting times or information). You might also share information about taking action, e.g. how to get copies of your notes, how to make an official complaint about your care, how to change your hospital/consultant and so on.”

I’m sorry it has taken so long to get this far, but I hope the new topic area will give you a space to discuss these important issues.

with best wishes
Leah
