Mouth Infection ?!

Hi Ladies!

Happy New Year to you all not sure Happy New Year is always the right phrase but sending you all lots of happiness in the year of 2012.

As some of you know my mum is on a TDM-1 trial and is having some problems with her mouth. She was losing alot of a weight so the hospital prescribed fortisip and fortijuice drinks to build her up but since her last session it looks like she has ulcers on her gums and two little balls under Tongue keep flaring up.

Our GP prescribed GelClair on the recommendation of alot of you ladies on her but just wondered if any ideas as I know mouth related issues can become nasty?

Thank you ladies

Hi Jen,

I used GelClair and found it worked well. I also used Anbesol for the ulcers. It is either in gel or liquid form. Personally I found the liquid better. Just try to drink plenty and keep mouth as fresh as possible.

Hope all goes well for you both

Salt water mouth wash may help. If you enquire with the breast care nurse there are specific treatments available which can ease discomfort to help her to eat. Sorry i cant remember what i used, something like nystatin???
Hope she finds relief soon. xx

Thank you so much for your advice. I think the GELCLAIR is helping, but do you think that we should contact the Chemo unit.

Does anyone know if mouth infections can affect blood levels? I’m worried because I’ve read a few things where your White blood cells can be affected? Any advice on this?

Mums on the fortisip’s and fortijuices one of each a day but worried this is not enough as she’s struggling to eat because of the problems in the mouth.

Any advice or info would be great. Am I worrying over nothing?

Love to all Jen x

Hi Jen,

I’m not a secondaries girl but did have mouth trouble earlier in my chemo.

I would recommend that you phone the chemo unit tomorrow if only for advice. I had a sore gum which resulted in me being in hospital for 4 days as my “newts” had dropped.

After this experience, I would always err on the side of caution and if your Mum’s chemo unit is like mine, they would rather you call and ask than overlook things.

Big hug to you and your Mum

hi
I used difflam for my sore mouth and it really helped.
As Annie says phone the chemo unit and ask for advice.
Love to your mum

Thank you for your advice and kind words. My mum doesn’t like to bother anyone she always thinks she is pestering or being a nuisance when I just wish she could listen to me and get things checked out.

I must admit without you ladies we wouldn’t of had GELCLAIR so all advice is very much appreciated. Thanks for your comments Annie. I will make sure she calls in the morning. I don’t want her to end up in hospital just over something that could of been checked out.

She visited a dentist last chemo session and she prescribed sensydene rapid paste but it seems that didn’t help or even made it irritated.

Your are all very brave thank you for your comments any further advice would be much appreciated

Mum spoke to the clinic this morning and they have prescribed Metronidazole 400mg. Anyone else been on Metronidazole?

She has treatment next Wednesday so they will asses then and see if any better then. She is still taking the fotijuice and fortisip’s to build up her weight

Love to all
