Mouth Ulcers and cracked lips

Hello - wonder if you can help.

I am on Abemaciclib and have had mouth ulcers & thrush for past 3 weeks . I have been prescribed a couple of mouth washes - Nystatin and another . Also been given drops from the chemist for the mouth, but now I have cracked and very sore lips . Would you know what might help with the dry and cracked lips ?

I use a combination of bonjela gel and O’Keeffe’s Lip Repair Overnight 7g

Oh thanks - will give the lip balm a try

Hi sonz16,

Thanks for your post.

A sore mouth including dry and cracked lips is a common side effect of abemaciclib. Having a sore mouth can have a big impact on your quality of life and your ability to eat and drink normally, so it’s important to get help to manage it. Caring for your mouth generally is a big part of this.

Like @BrendAnne, many people use products you can buy over the counter to help with dry and cracked lips. We’re unable to recommend any specific products and as the side effects are persisting after using the products prescribed or recommended to you, we would suggest you contact your oncologist or specialist nurse for further assessment of your symptoms and support.

The oncology pharmacist at the hospital can often be helpful in suggesting or prescribing other barrier gels, mouthwashes or lip balms such as MooGoo to treat mouth symptoms associated with treatment. Some people may also be referred to the oral health team to ask for further specialist help.

If you haven’t done so already, you may find it helpful to post your question in the section of the forum about targeted therapies to connect with others who have had similar side effects to ask about their experiences.
