MRI scan today

I am off to have an MRI scan today for them to see just how diseased my breast is as they did not get clear margins and check the other one. I recently had surgery to remove High grade DCIS and also two small invasive tumours. I have been told that whatever the result today is it wont change the surgery in the long run as the scan wont pick up miscropic disease. Does make me wonder why bother if the result as the end will be the same regarding surgery.

Has anyone else had one of the breasts and how reliable was it at picking up anything.

Thanks.

I have had several. They can look at the breast in much more detail.
I suppose they can see just where the cancer is with more accuracy

Thanks for your quick reply sarah. I am dreading it as I think I am going to feel very claustraphobic. The specialist I saw on Tuesday doesnt think there is much point having it as I am probably having a mastectomy, but it was decided in the multi disciplinary meeting. I wonder why some felt it was a good idea and he didnt.

My MRI scan picked up loads of tiny, tiny primary tumours that no other test could detect. I suppose it depends on the quality of the scan itself and the interpreter!

The breast MRI isn’t so bad. You are face down and can see the floor so you are able to see out of the tube somewhat

thanks for letting us know, how long do yu have to be in that thing?do you hear lots of noise?

It wasnt very pleasant! I was in this horrid tunnel thing for about 45 mins and as it was a hot day and they have no air conditioning in the hospital I was dripping were persperation. I felt really clautrasphobic in there. It seemed to go on for ever!!

Results are on 31st May. My team have said its very likely to be a mastectomy, so I guess I am wondering what I needed this for.

Oh well Its another step in the direction of getting to the end of treatment.

The night of my lumpectomy back in march was supposed to be my birthday night out with my girlfriends, it was postponed to last night, boy did I have a few drinks lol Needless to say I am suffering today, but it was nice to be the old me for an evening, rather than one who is treated with kid gloves by there family and friends because of the cancer.

I had an MRI Scan this week. Before I went in I took a pill that really helped. ( Ask you doctor or GP and he will supply something). I also keep my eyes closed now as I too am very claustrophobic. My machine had cool air running through it and I had ear plugs and noise defenders to keep out the noise. I almost fell asleep. I know you have had your scan now but perhaps this will help you in the future or any other people going for one soon. Val

Hi
I think it depends on how new the machine is. I’ve had two, the first was older, and probably more claustrophobic if you’re that way inclined. Second was newer, shorter and wider so much better.

Not the most pleasant experience, but very doable.

I agree Sheil, The old machine was much more claustrophobic and much closer to your face when lying on your back. In the old machine a few years ago they gave me special specs which blocked the machine out and showed your feet and the people behind the glass window. They do give you a buzzer to hold and to press if you need them. But I now prefer to close my eyes and the pills certainly made me feel calm. I agree an MRI Scan is very doable and knowing the information that they can get from one made me lie as still as could be, so that I didn’t need to do it all over again. Val

I think the machine I was in was an old one because the machine was literally cms away from my head and I kept knocking my head and did feel trapped. I think the meds before hand is a really good idea, thanks for suggesting that as it might help others in the future.

Stargazerlily, I hope the results you get on the 31st are good ones. I may be away on holiday but will be thinking about you on the day. Once you know the results you will feel better because you will know where you go from here. The waiting for any results is just the pits. Hugs, Val

Thanks you so much. I totally agree, once you know what your up against things become so much clearer. When I went to get my SNB results on Tuesday I was so nervous, I actually missed him saying they were clear!! lol He started talking about something else and I said I am sorry to but it buy are we nodes clear? My sister and my hubby both said yes he’s just told us that!

I hope you have a lovely holiday.
