My mum was told on Monday that she had breast cancer in both breasts on Monday and we have to go back tommorow to go over options . I have a list of questions I need to ask . My mum is 79 quite frail and vulnerable and I think she is just giving up . I feel so alone and know I need to compose myself to get all the information that my mum needs to make an informed choice . Has anyone got any advice or been in a similar situation
Dear Whimsie.
I am not in a similar position but i did have all my treatment with a lady who was 75. Se had some slight complications in the treatment she could have as she had a ‘bad heart’ (her description). So was unable to have mastectomy and reconstruction at the same time. This was just due to the length of time she would have been under anaesthetic. Her plan was bi lateral mastectomy, chemo then radiotherapy with the agreement that she could have a reconstruction completed 18 months or so later.
We are currently two years on and she had all her treatment, wears a soft bra with two foam softees and has decided not to go for reconstruction. Her tumours were Hormone+ so she takes Letrozole and has recovered really well.
You may find it useful to take a notepad, get the name and telephone number of Breast Care / Macmillan Nurses in case you need to contact them. I would say listen to what the Consultant has to say, maybe he/she will suggest a plan.
Hope this is helpful. Take Care Gilly x
