mum just been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer

Hi,I am new to this my mum has been diagnosed with secondary liver cancer from her breast, the doctor has said that half her liver is affected and said she has months rather than years left. She has started chemo, has anyone else had this diagnosed any advise would be appreciated.

Chazzer

Sorry to hear about your mum. I also have metastases to my liver (as well as lungs and spine) but no-one has told me I only have a few months and I hope and believe that I will have quite a few more years. There are women out there who have lived for more than 5 years with liver mets

It is good that she has started chemo. Many women have success with this; the liver mets can shrink and in some cases, go completely. Would it be worthwhile getting a second opinion?

There is information on the site about liver mets which you could read and you can find it here:

Love to you and your mum

Hi
I was diagnosed with breast cancer April 2010 at the age of 41 and after a mastectomy, chemo and Radio I thought all was going to be ok. Unfortunately October 2011 I was told that the cancer had returned to the chest wall on the mastectomy site and the lymph nodes under the Sternum and Lung. I have started a chemo trial for triple negative breast cancer and I go for a body/bone scan in January to see if this is making any improvements.
I must admit that it is a very scary time for myself and my family more so because the doctors cannot tell you what the prognosis will be, how long you have etc because it all depends on how the cancer responds to treatment. I can only hope that the chemo will help and that I will be able to spend as much time as I can with my family.
We remain positive.
Take care Lou

Hi Chazzer,

I was diagnosed with liver mets in April, 2010. I was very scared at the time. My oncologist wasn’t sure how long I’ve got and didn’t know how I would respond to chemo. I had 2 tumours, one in each half of the liver.

After 6 cycles of FEC chemo, both of them disappeared. Although I’m now on my 3rd chemo due to more progression, my liver has remained stable. I know I’ll be on some sort of treatment to keep me alive, but nobody can put a figure on how long we can live.

I hope all the best with your mum’s treatment.

Please let us know if there’s anything we can help with.

Hi chazzer
i was diagnosed with liver mets in feb 2009 so over 2.5 years ago. The mets were throughout my liver and nobody has ever told me exactly how many there were (i saw a ct scan image an it looked like lots)
i responded well to treatment and although my disease has since continued to progress - it has spread to bones and most recently brain - treatment also seems to be progresssing. i have a good quality of life and actually feel quite well
I haven’t been given a life expectancy but i did say as long as it was over 3 months i didn’t want to know. I really do think that anything over that time frame and it is mostly guess work. like long term weather forcasts!
I hope that your mum responds well to her treatment and becomes one of the many (and there are many) women who defy their poor prognosis and lives for much, much longer
big hug
melissa
ps the picture shows me looking very pleased with myself because i was at the moonwalk (i did the half - so 13 miles) in May of this year
