MX scar, what does yours look/feel like?

Hello ladies,

Could i please have your comments regarding the look and feel of your mx site.

I finished chemo in May and had my rt mx on the 10th June, i had really bad seroma which did eventually go down, but then i was very lumpy and red and sore all around the MX site, after 3 lots of antibiotics and was refered back to my surgeon who 2 weeks ago had me back in theatre for evacuation of heamatoma’s and adhesions, ive been back to see him and he seems happy

BUT

Im still so sore, i have swelling under the arm ok thats normal but its the soreness and lumpyness thats getting me down, plus the tightness of my chest, jeez it feels hard, i cant bear to have clothes agaist me and every movement hurts, it feels like really bad sunburn, ive tried cold cotton hankies against me,
im getting so low now, ive done the chemo and got through that, ive had two operations, and all im asking for is to be able to put my bra on with softie and get on withe the day.

ive already had to cancel the start of my rads, and my fitting for my prostesis. now im due to start rads in 2 weeks, and dont want to delay it again i just want all this to be over and done with,

Is anyones scar lumpy, dimpled, tight, sore?

thankyou ladies i look forward to your replys

take care

Donna

Hi Donna

I had that feeling of not being able to bear clothes touching my chest area. I found that silk or satin against it was less sore. I looked out old underwear and just cut squares out of it. It did get better eventually but it is unpleasant while you are going through it.

I think all that you describe is normal. I had the horrible sunburn feeling for a few months - definately silky slippy clothes are better and as few layers as possible. It does get better slowly, but I still find my chest and arm are sometimes “tight” years after. It becomes “normal” after a while, and you forget its there. Swimming helps a lot - but best to avoid during rads. Aloe vera gel applied and left to dry on the painful bits seems to form a protective layer between you and your clothes. Hope this helps, love Mo

hi donna,

I had my mx in November last year, I suffered like yourself with tightness, seroma which was drained, but the worst of it was the soreness which when my clothes touched my skin it felt like someone was rubbing coarse sandpaper on it, ouch, I went to my G.P. who prescribed amitriptyline 10mg, I take one at night when I go to bed, if I forget to take it the tightness and soreness is back almost immediately, I put up with the discomfort for as long as I could because I didnt want more meds to take, but in the end I couldnt stick it any longer. I still do the stretching exercises I was given after my op they do seem to help with the tightness, the scar itself isnt too bad just got a small pocket of swelling just under my arm and to the side a bit, my bcn said it should go in time, she described it to me as a sponge soaking up fluid, and that it couldnt be drained because the fluid has been absorbed, that seemed quite possible so I am waiting to see what happens with that. Hope this helps but if you dont get the amitriptyline from your G.P. maybe give your surgeons secretary a ring and ask for advice there. all the best , hope you get sorted soon, x Liz x
