My Mum- bone scan then CT Scan- is this normal?

Hi everyone,

My mum was diagnosed with secondary bone mets in Nov 2007, and went to her Oncologist at her 3 monthly check-up two weeks ago stating she had been getting a ‘dull-ache’. They did an x-ray there and then, which showed nothing, so they referred he for a bone scan, which was today. After he initial bone scan, they asked her where her her ache was (its in her lower right back), and they focused on this area. They then asked her to wait until another scan machine was free ( one that did a 360 degree angle),and she got another scan done at her lower back. They then gave her a CT scan at her lower back. Is this normal?? When she was first diagnosed she just had a bone scan (she had a CT Scan done prior to this which showed a bone abnormality). It just makes me worried that they have found something, or that they could’nt find anything? Sorry for rambling on, but unexpected tests just fill me with worry!! Has anyone had anything similar done?

Thanks in advance for all your help, and sorry for pestering you all!!

Hi Nicola

I had a bone scan which shown something, then an MRI scan which confirmed bone mets in two places. They then did a CT scan to see if they could see anything else - the CT scan didn’t show anything else - good news for the moment!

Best wishes
Sue

Hi Nikki,

I have had a CT Scan in April (I had 2 litres of fluid on my lung) and it showed I had “deposits” on my lung. I had a bone Scan in April also which did not show anything much. I then had another CT scan quite recently which showed I had deposits in various areas of my spin which did not show up on the bone scan and the deposits on my lung. I am on Xeloda (chemo tablet form) now and I am due to have another CT Scan in December hopefully to see if Xeloda is working.

I hope this helps you.
