my resluts-- but wasnt told if I defo need chemo.

hi I got my results yesterday after having my lump removed and some nodes. They told me they had got it all, but it was grade 3 invasive. I am very happy with the results and I dont have to have more surgery. They told me I am going to have to see an oncoligist next week to see if I need chemo. I would of thought that they would of known this yesterday? Does any one now if this is a normal procedure to wait another week to find out if I need chemo.

I was told I was also going to have a ct on my stomach chest and bone scan… Is this normal?

If any one has been through this or Knows please let me know. Thank you

hi newmel,

I am glad your margins were clear so you dont have to have more surgery.

I am 36 and because of my age, my bcn told me from the first fine needle biopsy that chemo was likely as they tend to throw everything plus the kitchen sink at younger women. When my results from the operation came in and i was told it was a grade three, the surgeon again said chemo was likely, but said it was not a final decision yet as the results came through before the mext MDT team meeting, where the group of specialists sit and discuss the best treatment plan for you. So i wasnt formally told i was having chemo until my first appointment with the oncologist, and then he told me what type of chemo i would be having and when it would start.

I think that a young age, grade 3 and any nodal involvment are usually the things that determine if you have chemo and what type. Also, they take hormone status into account too.

All hospitals have different approaches to scans etc. My trust only scan you at your stage of treatment if there is nodal involvment . I think they have to draw a line somewhere, and thats it at my NHS trust.

By the way, chemo can be pretty yuk at times but it is doable and it is over quite quickly, i had mine from april to august this year and it wasnt anywhere near as bad as i had expected.

I too am assuming I’ll have chemo though not had results yet but know nodes are involved as came up on a second core biopsy so not a surprise - at least that way I only had to have 1 op but just hoping nargins are clear so I don’t have to have another- I have very large boobs though so think there should have been enough to play with first time!!!
Is it normal to have a full scan if nodes are involved? - I am hoping so as I just want to know for sure whether it has spread further though obviously very scared at the thought of that you need to know what you are dealing with.
I’m honestly welcoming all the treatment I can get. anything to help increase the odds in my favour. my consultant already talked about tablets for 5 plus years so I assume this means they already know it is hormone receptive but I didn’t ask ( should have) but it was 2 hours before my Op and I had a migraine from hell so not really with it!
Just have to wait til Friday for results meeting now & keep taking the pain killers for my arm

They knew mine was er positive after the core biopsy so very possibly they know yours is too already. Different hospitals have different guidelines re scans and i have a vague recollections some only do them if there are a few nodes involved, not just one, but mine definitely do them for any nodal involvment. Your bcn will know plus she will have your biopsy results to check if you are hormone positive.

I was like you re the treatment. From the outset i said that if there is any course of action that would give me even a 0.00005% extra chance of survival then i want it, and i warned them that if they said no chemo then i would have been rowing about it with them!

Hi Vicky

Thank you so much for that, you have put my mind at rest now. How are you feeling now after your chemo has stopped? I am very gald to hear that chemo wasnt as bad as you thought it would be. I am finding that thinking about things and not knowing things is more scary than the operation was it self.
My mum has just been through it all as well she had a masectomy last year and 3 weeks ago had the rest of her reconstruction done. She didnt have to have chemo though.

Good luck for friday I hope all your margins are clear. The week will pass by quickly. Last week when I was waiting for my results i made sure I had something to do every day so I wasnt sitting around thinking what the results will be. So if you can keep yourself busy
time will pass quickly.
When I go friday to see the onconolist I am going to speak to them about having some eggs frozen. I am only 37 and have no children and would like to have one, one day if I can.

good luck millykins01 and stay positive.
take care
