Nail varnish!!!

…yes, friends, this may seem a little frivolous. Having MX +SNB on Fri afternoon. I read somewhere on pre-surgery guidelines that apart from taking jewellery off (my surgeon has VERY expensive rings but no varnish)you shouldn’t wear nail varnish. Anyone out there heard this - why? Given I’m not likely to be painting or reaching to my toes for a while, I thought I’d get it down pre hpl. Any difference 'tween finger-nail and toe-nai varnish?

I have rellies and friends in Oz who have sent me useful info. They talk about the community nurse visiting every day if you go home with a drain. Haven’t seen this in any of the info here - does it happen?

Thanks, B

Hi when I had my MX and SNB in August I was asked if I was wearing any nail polish as a matter of fact had taken it off before I went so obviously there must be a reason, I came home after 2 days with drains in and the district nurse came for 4 days then took them out, hope this is some help and all the best for Friday,

the anaesthetist can tell by looking at your nails how you are doing under the general anaesthetic, thats why you cant have nail polish on. Suppose is a pretty good reason really!

Good luck with the operation

Vickie is right - I actually went for surgery wearing nail varnish and they removed it so the anaesthetist could tell if there wasn’t enough oxygen (apparently nails change colour!)

Hi BW Vickie is right My understanding is that the nail beds are an indicator of circulation if you press on your finger nail it goes a bit paler then when pressure released it goes pink again quite quickly. This shows taht there is peripheral perfusion to the extremities ie. fingers and toes. I had WLE and ANC the district nurse rang me every day to ask about amount of drainage and came to see me some days too. Good luck with the op on Fri. Jackie

Hi

Just to add to this, they put a pulse oximeter on your finger which measures oxygen levels. It doesn’t work with nail varnish. I’m a respiratory nurse and use pulse oximeters for my job.
