Lots of evidence that nail varnish is full of chemicals and known carcinogens. They create synthetic oestrogens and therefore potentially contribute to cancer.
You Tax girls might want to google hand cooling and tax…worked brilliantly for me. It’s used routinely in a number of US hospitals and, I believe, in some London hospitals.
No nail probs, no peripheral neuropathy, no palmar/plantar syndrome. The unit thought I was bonkers, but so what. Worked fab… Not so much as a snagged or funny-coloured nail ![]()
For anyone who’s also doing Paxman head cooling… I borrowed a spare head cooling unit and stuck my hands in that. The importers of the cooling mitts were out of stock when I had mine.
Here’s a link to be going on with.

It’s a bit of a crap one but there are also much bigger and better studies with the same results. Worth a think if you are concerned

Phew phew phew!!! I have bought 4 of those ice pack thingies for emergencies…you whack em on something and they freeze like having a pack of peas…I figured that I’d take 4 wellie socks along with me and put ice packs in them and put my hands in 2 and my feet in 2…mentioned this to chemo nurse and she looked at me as if i was several sarnies short of a full picnic!
I will stick to my plan and abandon the nailvarnish…!
I had ice mitts and ice booties given to me during chemo at my hospital. I had no peripheral neuropathy, only lost 2 little toe nails and my finger nails became very discoloured but did not fall off.

Just read the link about the frozen gloves. seems like a simple idea - why isn’t it used, must be better than neuropathy and nail damage.
Where did you have your treatment Vivrog?
Maybe we could just sit outside in the cold!
I’ve got such a long list of questions before the first TAX. Including LiF, it has occurred to me that doctors surgeries will be closed on 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th December - just right for our first TAX on 23rd. So I would like to be armed with all the painkillers etc when I leave the hospital.
I’m just picturing you in your frozen wellie socks.
mmmmm its occured to me as well…will be stocking up on tons of everything…
I tried black nail varnish but it looked so dreadful on my short nails that I had to take it off. But then I discovered Rimmel’s Nail Rescue which is colourless. I used it throughout Taxotere and then through a year of Herceptin. (Herceptin isn’t too good for nails either). I kept my nails during the Tax and they weren’t too bad during the Herceptin.
Three years later I’m still using it and my nails are much better than they used to be.
Good luck everyone. Anthi x
