nausea/swelling

Have just begun radiotherapy and have had 2 sessions. After yesterday’s session there was a swelling on my left hand/thumb (same side as my cancer). Anyone else had this or heard of it? Today, as an added bonus, about 2 hours after my session, I began to feel quite sick. I wasn’t actually sick but it’s taken about 8 hours to feel more normal again. Anyone any info please?

Hi Jacquie,
I just noticed we spell our names the same way so thought I would say hi! Also, nobody’s answered you yet, so this will push your message up to the top.
I didnt have rads so sorry i can’t help you, but it doesn’t sound v nice. Hope it’s better after your next sessions.
love Jacquie

hi jacquie, i had 25 rads and although i didnt get sick i felt so tired and washed out that all i could do was sleep, i think it was the travelling to the hospital every day. as to the swelling, did you have lymphnodes removed? you may have lymphodemia, have a word next time you go and see what they think it is as it needs close monertering if it is lymphodemia starting. i have it in my hand and arm . hope this helps. lynn

Hi Lynn and Jacquie,
Thank you for your replies! Have spoken to a nurse at the hospital and they are keeping a close eye on it but thought I’d like to hear from someone who’s in the same boat as me. Found this website by accident and feel it’s such a help. Thanks again for your messages and hope all going well with you both.

Hello There
My first thought on reading your post was ‘lymphodema’. Mine starts up in my thumb first of all -although it waited a bit longer than during radiotherapy to do so. The next thing is a tightness in my upper arm- nothing in-between ,curiously.

You may need your BCN to refer you to the lymphodema clinic but if this persists you must get to see someone before it starts to spread. Ive managed to keep mine under control for almost 3 years now through very simple and easy exercises.

My guess on the sick feeling was either you had a mild tummy bug coincidentally -or that you ‘expected’ to feel ill because of the new treatment. Its nothing to be concerned about -just our old human brains working things out.

Good luck with the rest of your treatment. Before you know it you will be so far from treatment you will struggle to recall the details.

Hi everyone,
Thanks to you all for your comments. Not been on the site because I have to stay away from Mon to Fri for my radiotherapy. Swelling is still there in my hand and in fact started to get worse when I was out last night! – what a bummer! Will see someone when I go for my treatment tomorrow.
Hope you’re all doing well.
Love,
Jacquie xx
