needle biopsy

Hi everyone

I am new here and not diagnosed so I hope you don’t mind me posting.

I started to get breast pain around the time of my period in one breast(haven’t had that since before having a baby) so I went to the docs and she examined me sitting up and said all felt fine but if I wanted to I could go back next month for her to check again, which I did. She looked at me and said ‘I will just refer you to the breast clinic to reassure you’ (without examining me) so I went along and the consultant examined me lying down and found a ‘nodular area’ but said he would need to see me in 6 weeks when I was mid month. I went home and panicked so phoned his secretery who went and asked him if he thought it was cancer, he said definaely not! So I went back today for second appointment and he did 3 needle biopseies! I have gone from thinking all is OK (but still scared) to being petrified! He says I shouldn’t be concerned…!eh! anyone had a similar experience?? Thanks X

gosh, how scary for you. and how worrying waiting for the results. Was this private? was it a breast clinic or what? Whatever it was just hang in there, use this forum no matter how silly it feels.

I am waiting for results, am sure its fine, but get lots of wobbly moments and everyone is helping me through it

Dear OldandLumpy and Lucy,

Thank you for posting back and sorry to hear, Oldandlumpy that you are also in this scary place. It was an NHS breast clinic, yours? I told my consultant that I wanted to draw a line under all this business as soon as I went in, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that he went straight for the definitive route!

I have found the staff at the clinic, quite cold and non communicative, I wonder if this is normal? My consultant made an unrelated phone call whilst I was half naked on the bed waiting to have my fate decided…it really upset me, but I didn’t show it.

I suffer from IBS in times of stress and I have been having tummy problems since the first appointment 6 weeks ago and I’m losing wieght and having regular panic attacks, but I guess this is normal.

I also feel silly, as I called the amazing team here at BBC 6 weeks ago and they were amazing and I emailed them to say the consultant had said it wasn’t cancer now I feel back at square one…

Sorry to moan, just tired today X

yes mine was a national health clinic. I used the time between finding the lump and going to the gp to research where to go, we dont have a center of excellance near me. I chose the Royal Free because their website was quite user freindly and had lots of info and access to support groups in the hospital, they also had an accupuncturist who visited the hospital to help with the side effects of treatment.

Whereas the whittington just had a bald impersonal page with very little info and said if you needed support you could use the services at the Royal Free.

Dont know if I made the right choice, but they were very friendly there. The bit I appreciated was that they kept announcing how late appointments were running and apologising. Also when i got upset over having to have needles and things they stopped till the Breast Nurse came in, not that I needed her, but it showed concern.

Hi Rud

It does seem that you have been treated quite dismissively. I am surprised that you weren’t assigned to a BCN at your appointment for your needle biopsies. When I had my second mammogram I was given the needle biopsies there and then and introduced to and spoke with my BCN, before anyone knew what the results were going to be. It seems all hospitals are not the same, which is a surprise to me. I cannot speak highly enough of all the staff I came into contact with during my treatment.
