New diet research

Hi all,

Just thought I’d post this here, for anyone who missed the story in the news yesterday;

theguardian.com/society/2017/mar/06/mediterranean-diet-may-reduce-risk-of-form-of-breast-cancer-study

independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/mediterranean-diet-cuts-risk-deadly-form-breast-cancer-40-per-cent-a7613106.html

There are some links on the article/s to the actual study for anyone who is interested in finding out more and researching the validity. I know that diet considerations in bc treatment are often debated heavily, but thought this particular report merited being read about…or certainly watched for future research that comes out of it.

Thanks Charys. I have always followed a mediterranean diet on the whole, mainly because I really enjoy that sort of food so I thought “oh goody, i can just keep doing what i already do”. But as I’m HR+ it looks as though the diet has little impact on my type of cancer, but my view is that it is such a tasty and healthy diet anyway it can’t hurt for us all to follow it, or most of it.

The received wisdom on diets for staying clear of cancer seems to focuss on the “balanced and variety” type of thing, which the med diet has in spades. Thanks for spotting the article.x

While we’re talking about diet, does anyone know what the advice is re soya products and ER positive BC? On the one hand soya seems to be good, as countries like Japan where they eat a high soya diet have low rates of BC. On the other hand Im pretty sure I read somewhere that soy gets turned into oestrogen in the body, so should be avoided by those of us with ER+ bc.

can anyone shed any light on this please?

thanks

Jacksy

I was reading something about Soya the other day, I’ll find it and let you know (it was a real paper book so might take me a while) as you can see ‘focused’ on work today!

A Dr talks about it being advisable to favour organic soy to avoid genetically modified plant sources, there is a note that is awaiting confirmation that soy might not get along with Taxol, it also says isoflavone if taken in pill form has been associated with an aggravation of certain BCs but not in the case of soy taken as food

Hi Charys

Have only just had a chance to review this article/research. It appears to have been set up and conducted appropriately and so my guess is that the results have some merit.

Whilst I understand/agree that we don’t want people to self blame inappropriately,
I take the view that all of us might do well to take note of research findings - provided that the studies are valid - it will help people-future generations to make optimum choices in the future and maybe prevent them from suffering as we have.

There is no reason for us to blame ourselves for things we weren’t aware of, but we can choose to take heed of them in the future

Xx

Thanks everyone for your replies. Anyone else got further info on this?

Jacksy
