New drug to go alongside Herceptin
New drug to go alongside Herceptin Hi all, not quite sure where to post this, but a friend in the US sent me an email today about a new Major Clinical Breast Study that is beginning in up to 100 different cancer treatment centres across the US.
This study is to look at the safety and benefit of adding lapatinib(Tykerb) to trastuzumab (Herceptin) for the treatment of early stage HER2+ breast cancer.
This is the first major clinical trial of its kind - started March 16th. Apparently, worldwide, no more than 100 patients have been tested with this combination treatment. The lead doctor, Edith Perez, director of the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, is leading a consortium of 35 investigators who will enroll 109 participants at up to 100 different cancer treatment centres across the US. Dr. Perez said: "We are finding that the best way to treat a cancer is to understand the biological characteristics of the cancer and then use therapies directed at those specific biological or molecular abnormalities. "
Information about the study is available at: http//clinicialtrials.mayo.edu
I think this is very exciting news for bc patients with HER2+ cancers. I don’t fall into category as mine is HER2-, but this info may be of interest to those of you who are HER2+.
Liz.
It was kind of you to post this, Liz. I’m sorry you haven’t had any replies. So often the case on this site!
I am HER2+, but received neither herceptin nor chemo, so am an anomaly in bc terms. Only time will tell if this decision was right.

Thank you so much for your post. I am having Heceptin so very interested in this trial.
The drug that you refer to has just been agreed for use in secondary BC that is not responding to Heceptin and has had some amazing results from what I have heard.
So very interested to see what happens.
