new member - scared

I lost my big sister just over a year ago to breast cancer and now, today, I have received a recall letter for further screening following a routine mammogram. Just terrified it is happening to me now so soon after losing my sister. The thoughts that are running around my head are not good or positive just scary.

I’m so very sorry to hear of your loss, and of your worry about recall. While it is a very scary situatiion you find yourself in, don’t lose sight of the fact that very few women die of breast cancer. If it is caught early, it can be cured and in the majority of cases, usually is. And, the recall might just be a precaution and might result in a less worrying diagnosis. You don’t give your age, or when your appointment is for, but I am sending good wishes and hoping for a good resolution for you.

Take care

Appointment for Wednesday 13th - so very quick - is that a bad thing ? Makes me feel something must have been seen for it to be so quick.

Hi Bigjill,

I can only echo what Poemsgalore has said. I see from your other post your appointment is next week, and that is good. You will have less time to worry. Please don’t read anything in to this early appointment - the national guidelines on the mammogram screening programme is for everyone to be seen within 2 weeks on a recall, and most clinics do this within a week. The vast majority of recalls result in people being sent home with nothing to worry about. The minority go on to have an ultrasound scan and if necessary a biopsy - all on the same day, and they get the results of the mammogram and ultrasound straight away. Some may have to wait another week for the biopsy result.
My best advice to you is to make sure you have someone reliable with you when you go to the appointment, and between now and then try to keep busy, spoil yourself, eat chocolate, walk the dogs, see friends.

All my best wishes for a good result. xxx
