Newbie seeking solace

Hi all. I am a bowel cancer survivor of 13 years, and now it looks like I have breast cancer. This was picked up on a routine mammogram. My results were missed so after 7 weeks I rang to say I don’t have my results. That sparked very fast action and I was recalled. 2 days ago when I had 2 lots of biopsies. I have a 4mm mass and 4cm of calcification , and I was told as good as , that it was cancer. I am seeing the surgeon on Tuesday to get my results and plan surgery. (I’m sure there can’t be any mistake that it isn’t cancer now that’s happening). So, here I am, facing the unknown again. The beating bowel cancer forum was my absolute lifeline when I went through this before, and I hope this lovely forum will be the same. So hello, and here we go!

Hi @angepange1 welcome to the forum, even though it’s not somewhere that you want to be. Thank goodness you were on the ball enough to chase up your mammogram results. I too was diagnosed with BC after a routine mammogram. Called back in and whilst having the biopsy said hopefully that my mother had had a blocked milk duct, perhaps this is something similar. Nope, came the reply, it’s breast cancer but the biopsy will tell us what sort. There are lots of other examples on the forum of women being effectively told at the testing stage that they have breast cancer, so don’t be too perturbed at it. Breast cancer treatment has come on in leaps and bounds over the last decade or so and has a fantastically high success rate. As I’m sure you know through your bowel cancer, oncologists never use words like cured but the survival rate is extremely high. But whilst knowing that at this stage is encouraging, I expect that the thought of having to get through more treatment is difficult to deal with. The forum has lots of different categories so that when you know what your treatment plan is, you can go to the relevant category to ask questions, download or just search through the threads that are already available. Breast Cancer Now also has other programmes to help you feel supported through the process but one of the best is the nurses who are on the other end of the phone should you just need a chat. Call 0808 800 6000 from 9am-4pm Monday to Friday and 9am-1pm on Saturdays, it can really help. Good luck for the appointment with the surgeon, come back and let us know how you got on.

Goodness @angepange1 I’m so sorry you find yourself here in another awful situation. You found the best place though. This forum has definitely been a life line for me. There is such great support and advice. I no longer feel the need to google anything, I can come here, find a similar story and before you know it I know I’m going to be ok. What ever the results, breast cancer is very treatable.

It sounds like you are in the system properly now and on their radar. Keep things that way. I was sent home in May because they didnt feel or see the lump that I did. It’s not anyones fault but they think they scanned the wrong area. I went back in October and on 3rd Nov got my breast cancer diagnosis. I always like to give a little reminder of the time that I lost so they remember. It also helps them realise why I doubley question everything they say.

So glad you made it to this forum but sorry for the reasons you have. Stay as positive as you can. If you do have breast cancer you found it and that is what has saved your life!

Big hugs

Welcome @angepange1

My BC was picked up following a routine screening mammogram in October 2024. Biopsies confirmed diagnosis the following month.

I lurked on the forum for a month then posted on a thread for those with the same cancer as me. It was one of the best decisions I’ve made. It’s been a safe space to share, to get sage advice and support from those who’ve trodden the path before me.

Keep reading and reaching out. As @Tigress said, when you find out what you’re dealing with, look for a thread with your type of cancer.

Best wishes x
