newly diagnosed DCIS

Morning!

Oooooh! don’t know what I’d do, re: results! On the one hand - good news would send you off on hols in a better frame of mind, on the other hand, if the MRI was a bit inconclusive, or confusing - that would just send the old imagination into a flat spin again! That’s the problem with medical results, unless there is a chance to, not just GET them, but have anything explained as well, and everything put into context? How good is the clinic in that way? Is there someone you can really talk to there?

Might be best to “go on holiday” today - focus on getting ready, I know it isn’t something that you can put OUT of your mind, but try and park it in a corner somewhere! Use the time away to build yourself up, rest, relax as much as possible, good food, good wine! - so you can tackle the next stage with recharged batteries.

Sons! - I sent a text to mine when I got back to the ward after my op, saying “Everything OK, op went well. Should be home tonight” Text back from 18 year old “Er, great! Who is this?”…to which he got… “Your mother!!! In hospital!!! Remember?!” He is lovely really though!

Look after that neck, it’s a miserable sort of pain, isn’t?

Catch up later, or if not, have as good a holiday as you can - sure it’ll do you good!

Hallo Lizzie,
Decided not to ask for results.Might not be good and I would have to take the info; on hols with me!
Done shopping and gardening ready for hols.
Mountains of food for the cats and dog. Two eldest coming in to see to cats and youngest having dog. They are 22,nearly 23,27 and lad 29 by the way(forgot to say).
What was the procedure on the morning of your op?
You seemed to cope very well with the MRI scan, not like me, I think I was a complete baby!
I think I am accepting of the situation more now, cant believe it is only a week since I had the diagnosis.
Read somewhere that they are not sure people with DCIS should be having the op because not all will carry on to be invasive anyway.

What do you think?

Hi Jeanie
Just a quickie, to say, Have a good hloiday, and catch up when you return.

Yes, seen the info on “needless ops for DCIS” - my view? I was told at least 30% may become invasive - lots of DCIS doesn’t change, and would not give any problems.

However - nobody can tell whose DCIS would do what - so, personally (and everyone is different - but this is how I feel) happy to have had the op + rads. Would find it very difficult to wait and see if things “turned” - and I also feel that “everything has to start somewhere” I couldn’t feel my lump, it was found during routine screening - so I wonder at what stage it could have got to by the time I found it.

Better out than in, in my book!!

Take care, and try and have a lovely time

Love

Hi Jeanie, Lizzy et all,

Well I’m out after my WLE. Feel a bit down as I have much mre of a ‘dent’ this time. Oh well, should have expected it really.Aslo more painful than I remember so have taken more painkillers.

Completely agree with you Lizzy, about the treatment for DCIS. I’m glad mine’s out. I also asked the consultant what grade it was and mine is ‘high grade’ so was highly likely to turn into invasive if it was left. Also, high grade DCIS turns into high grade invasive cancer. EEK! Might be useful to aks your grade if you get the chance Jeanie.

So I’m feeling a bit low about the ‘high grade bit’ but also glad and relieved that I found it in the first place!!

Foegot to say- have a good holiday Jeanie!!

Love to all

Hallo all.
Back from a wonderful holiday in Italy and glad I went.
I didnt ask for results from the MRI scan after all because I didnt want to dwell on them on my holiday.
Bit concerned now about reason for removing two nodes.
It dosent seem a common occurence for DCIS.
Am I reading too much in it?
I do know they are taking 1cm margin not 0.5.
Any explanations.

Hi Jeanie,

If you would like to give the helpline a ring I’m sure the staff here will be only too happy to talk to you about your questions.

Kind regards,
Jo, Facilitator

Hi Jeanie
Welcome back, glad you had a good holiday, sure it’ll have done you good! I was originally supposed to be going away with my sister this coming weekend, but the timing was obviously not going to be good, so we’ve planned a week away end of September. Something to look forwards to!

Don’t know definatively re: lymph nodes / DCIS. Think it maybe varies from surgeon to surgeon? Try not to second guess, have you a phone number for your breast care nurse at the hospital? When do you next see anyone, sorry, forgotten when your op date is? Honestly, it does get better once things are moving forwards!

Take care
Lizzy

Hallo Lizzy,
Op tomorrow and I have permanent butterflies!
Been shopping for front opening pyjamas and soft bras.
Husband as had party looking for my size and checking for softness!
Horrible wet and rainy so limited how to pass the rest of the day.
Were you out the next day.How did you feel?
Someone suggested talking to the help line with all my queries but dont fancy talking for ages about it all.
Hope you get away in September.
Wher are you going?
Hoping to take grandchildren to a booked holiday to Isle of Wight in July too.
Jeanie x

Hi Jeanie

Glad you had a good break away.

Thought I’d share some of my knowledge with you about the lymph node thing as I also have DCIS. When I had my ultrasound scan the sonographer spent ages in my arm pit ( i had no idea there was anything there at all) and I saw some notes that said ‘enlarged lymph node in arm pit’. When I went for my second WLE two weeks ago I asked the consultant if he was concerned about this and if he was going to remove any nodes. He said that with DCIS only about 2% of cases have infected lymph nodes too, so as a rule his policy is not to remove them. So I guess everywhere is different. I know in the USA they take lymph nodes with every case of DCIS.

So I would try not to worry. In fact, I’m worrying about my enlarged lymph gland in the arm pit now and almost wish they had removed some to test them!

Hope this helps,

Love Freddie xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Jeanie, you’ll be in hospital, sorry - missed you! Well, by the time you get this, it’ll be done, big milestone over.

I came out same day, think that’s quite common - but you really must take it easy for a few days. I stupidly did too much, (and by too much - it was just mooching around the house - not running a marathon)as I felt fine, but on day 3/4 post op - crash!! Felt like I’d been run over by steam roller, very weepy. Just remember, this is an op that used to involve a few days/week in hospital, where you would have had to rest, as there was no choice. Just because they chuck us out so quickly now, does not mean we get better faster!

So, feet up, have everyone waiting on you, in fact - what are you doing on the computor?! - Behave yourself, woman!!

Freddie - results soon, stop torturing yourself about that node! - talk to someone at the clinic and explain how you feel, and get reassurance. It is very easy for our brains to fill in the gaps when we don’t have all the information - and easy to imagine all sorts. Thinking about you, and Debs, she gets her results very soon as well, doesn’t she? I feel I really want to know how you all get on, weird how we feel we know each other, - this site has become very important to me!

Take care

Hallo everyone!
Four days since the op.
Been a rocky time.Had menierers attack about two hrs after, when I was on choppy seas for awhile then had rapid and irregular heartbeat and was the last one to be discharged on the evening(drs and another ECG).
Since then I have had problems with my asthma and a cold!Took the dressing off and I must have had a reaction to it because it is blistered and red. Seeing practise nurse tomorrow.
I have had numerous visitors, which is lovely because they care, but I wish they would all leave after about an hour at the most!
Never felt so tired.
Surrounded by flowers, cards and lots of choccies. Went for a walk round Tescos this morn but I felt like I had climbed a mountain.
Next bit is the results. Got to wait for an appoint:
LOve to all.
Jeanie xxxxxxxxx

Hi Jeanie
Good to see you back, sorry you had a rough ride.

Those dressings are fierce - mine was also pretty sore, hope it’s settled for you.

Like you say, lovely to have visitors, but tell 'em to s*d off when you’ve had enough! You are number 1 right now - you can get away with anything, say whaterver you want!! Make the most of it - it dioesn’t last long!

Take care

Love debs xxx

Hi Debs
Up in (not very)sunny Yorkshire - nice bit of the world, and a cracking new oncology / radiotherapy unit - just when I need it!
Lizzie XX

Hallo Lizzie and Debs,
Been back in hosp over the last few days.
Breathlessness got worse so G.P. sent me back in.
They thought I had a blood clot and gave me injections in my stomach.
Still on a trolley last night so discharged myself.
Feeling lots better today.
Had a shower without help.
Just had a magnificient bouquet delivered from my boss and people at work.
Some lovely people in this world-including you people on this support site who have become friends.
Love and good wishes to you all wherever you are on this journey.
Jeanie xxxx

Jeanie
That’s pants!! Poor you, must have been worrying, hope you are getting well looked after now?

Those trolleys are a nightmare, how do they expect people to get better…looks like something out of MASH! (All time favourite programme - there’s athought - why don’t they reshow it? - they do everything else!)

Keep in touch, let us know how you get on. I have problems with logging on sometimes, so if I don’t always get back to you, I’ll still be reading and sending positive vibes!

Take care

LizzieXX

Hallo Lizzie.
Still breathless and feeling weak.
Managed Tesco’s today but went very slowly and held on to the trolly for dear life!
Keep telling myself that I am getting better every day but I didnt expect such a long job.
Wound itself is looking good!
No problems with it exept a bit of numbness. Full range of movement exept putting arm behind back and washing hair. That hurts!
My other shoulder and arm give me gip because of the spondylosis so showers are a bit of a pain.
Oh well.
Results should be soon. Waiting for an appoint; letter.
Will let you now.
Cheers.
Jeanie xx

Good to hear from you, Jeanie, and just keep taking it steady. Those results should be due soon - another big step forwards,
I’m over halfway through my rads - which is a nice thought!

Keep in touch,
Lizzie XX

Hallo Lizzie,
How are the rads doing?
Do you feel very tired with them?
How long after the op when you had your results?

You look lovely and cheerful on your picture.
Is that your horse too?
Hear from you soon
Jeanie xxxxx

Hi Jeanie,
Rads OK - 9 down 6 left! Feel tired about an hour or 2 after each one - just give in and shut my eyes…zzzzzzzzz!
I had my op on a Thursday and would normally have had results a week the following Monday, but it was Easter, so went in on the Wednesday. Unfortunately, due to Easter, results weren’t ready, but they phoned me with them on the Friday (I was having a weekend away in Edinburgh)so all in all just over 2 weeks. Any date for you yet?

Yes, they are both lovely horses, aren’t they? - my equine therapy! Frankie is mine - the darker one, but I also treat the other one, Gibson, as my own, as I ride him for someone else. Keeps me sane(ish!)

Take care - keep in touch
