Newly diagnosed & waiting for biopsy result

I am 72 years old and last had a routine mammogram 4 years ago. I have since checked the soft tissue in my breasts from time to time and everything seemed normal until 3 weeks ago when I found a very hard lump at the top of my right breast. I saw my doctor immediately and was referred to the cancer clinic, where I had a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy. I was told by the consultant that it was a cancer and am now waiting for the biopsy result. One thing, in particular, that bothers me, was the fact that the whole area was quite painful when I had the ultrasound and on examination by the consultant. Since then I have become very conscious of the lump to the extent that I feel it is growing almost daily. The area is not inflammed or painful unless it is pressed. I have even taken to sleeping on my left side, something I could never do before. Apparently, I have no lumps under my arm, but the whole area still seems quite uncomfortable & sensitive. Why?

Hi Sonntag,
It is a huge myth that ‘lumps’ are not painful, mine started as an itch, then slight pain and then lump. I also felt that it was growing. There is a good thread on here called something like ‘how did you find your lump’ - the spectrum is amazing.
I hope your biopsy results are as good as they can be.

Hi
Also just to add the biopsy can cause some pain around the area also. My breast was sore for some time after, even up into my arm pit. Talk to your bcn if it does not settle down. Take care debx

Hi Sonntag

I had a really painful breast for about three months before I found my lump on 28/5/10. It was really difficult to detect as it was almost in my armpit. My GP and the consultant said that I was lucky that it hurt as there was no reason for it to do so, but because it did ,I found it.

I would advise anyone with a sore boob to get it checked out. My invasive ductal cancer is only grade 1 despite being 8cm and “treatable”

All the best

Andi
