Hi All,
I have been diagnosed on 11/11/09 actually. a date forever burned into my mind now! Anyway here goes, probably the same story for everyone , found a lump in March , had a mammogram and ultrasound and Fine needle test, came back all clear ,hoorah!!! in November found lump again, not sure if the same one but had another ultrasound ,no mammagram this time but did have another fine needle asparation, came back ALL CLEAR, at the same time as ultrasound they took a biopsy, hells bells ! stage 1 cancer 1.6cm, I am devastated thought I did everything right. What is the point of FNA or mammograms/ultrasound if they give false information? Booked in for WLE and Sentinel node biop on 10th December, I am scared stiff. The surgeon phoned me at home and said they wanted a MRI, ‘just in case’ is this because it was missed in March? has anyone else had similar senario?

Hi olisnana
I am so sorry you find yourself in this position. My story is not the same as yours. I found my lump, was referred by GP and had mammogram, ultrasound scan and core biopsy at hospital appt. I was told there and then that they thought it was bc, which it was, but as it was lobular I had an MRI, to check the size and whether it was in the other breast, which it wasn’t. It did show up something else suspicious, which was biopsied, but clear. I had WLE and SNB in September and starting radiotherapy next week.
They just like to be safe. I imagine the surgeon wants to double check that they have found everything for you. Be reassured by this, not alarmed.
Good luck and let us know how you get on. You will find so much support here.

Hi Olisnana.
My story is similar to yours, only my 1st lump was 3 years ago, and I was told it was calcification. The lump has always been there but a couple of months ago seemed to get a little bigger. I did eventually go to my GP, who did refer me to a specialist and felt it was probably nothing. Saw the speacialist who again felt it was nothing, but still wanted me to have a mamogram and core biopsy etc, just to be on the safe side.
The results were conflicting, the mamaogram and core biopsy were benign, but the needle biopsy and ultrasound showed abnormal cells!! He decided that surgery was probably the best course of action,to be on the safe side, and then following this it was discovered that it was BC, stage 1, 1.8 cm, hormone sensitive.
The same thoughts went through my head, what if it’s been there all this time, what if it’s spread, what if, what if what if … but after the wle and 12 lymph nodes removed, I was assured they had got it all, and the lymph nodes were clear. I have just started chemo, as I’m only 38, so it gives me the best chance of it never returning, then radio, then tamoxifen.
I think your surgeon just like mine wants to check everything.
Don’t ever think you did anything wrong, you have done everything right, and now you can get the treatment you need. The wrong thing would have been to ignore it, and you didn’t so you should be proud that you had the strength to go back.
No one can explain my results, just as I’m sure no one can explain yours, but now is the time to think positive, and focus on getting better.
I wish you a speedy recovery and good luck in everything.

Hi All,
Thankyou so much for your replies,I have taken heart from them and am just counting the days now to the op. It 's so comforting to know I am not alone, althought my family have been great its not the same as hearing from someone in the same situation. I am not sleeping well and 4 am seems to be the time i lay awake thinking.
Anyway thankyou again i will keep in contact.
xx
Oh the 4am grims! I think we’ve all had those. Like Ann I had lobular cancer and had to have an MRI, which showed another suspicious area, I had another biopsy, which was clear. So I had WLE in Feb, rads May/June and hormone therapy. I went back to work last month (new job) and so I really feel like I’m moving on now. This time next year, you’ll be reassuring newbies yourself!
You are in good hands now and you will be looked after. An MRI shows up even more than a mammogram or ultrasould and is just another diagnostic tool. You’ll feel better once you’ve started your treatment, but if you continue having trouble sleeping, ask your GP for something to help you. I was dx on 12 Dec 09 had 9 weeks between dx and surgery, due to further tests, Christmas, new year etc, so I got some sleepers from the GP, which were a godsend. I only used them now and again, but you do feel better if you’ve had a good night’s sleep.
The MRI itself is fine, just very noisy. Lots of clunks, buzzes etc. A bit like a sci-fi B movie! Surgery is over in no time, one minute you’re talking to the anaesthetist, the next minute it’s all over. I think you’ll find afterwards that it wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
