Are you allowed ask for a sabbatical while you attempt to deal with your possibly non-permanent condition or find out how permanent it is? Would they have to hold your job open if you felt you might be able to come back after a break, and might you be able to try something else (possibly paid by someone else?) in the meantime while off, without having to actually resign or be dismissed? Like a trial separation? If you called it a year, they could offer a one year contract to replace you temporarily…
