I recently had bleeding from the nipple and was referred to a consultant who exmained me and did a mamogram and scan and advised that it was clear - however he said that due to my age he would remove the ducts under the nipple as a safe guard - the following week he told me that I would need to have a central excision with nipple areolar complex and reconstruction with Grisotti flap - will this be the end. Throughout all this time I have not been seen by any breast care nurse and find the whole situation worrying.
Hi from my own experience if you are not happy question the consultant, I had a discharge from my nipple, all mammograms and ultrasounds were clear,even swabs from the discharge were clear, only after i insisted that at my age i should not get a discharge did the consultant decide to do an excision biopsy, the results showed i had extensive pre cancer in all the tissue that was taken a small amount had just turned to cancer, i feel extremley lucky and i am so glad i questioned the consultant, i was told to go and buy some breast pads to “mop” up the discharge! if i hadn’t questioned him i would be in a completely different situation now, so my message is don’t be frightened to question and insist on further investigation if your not happy, you know your body better than anyone.
