Nipples!

Just a very minor query but I know you are all a font of knowledge … I had a follow-up appt with PS yesterday after bilateral mx & LD recon in January. All great, very happy etc but he would like to replace implants at some point & create some nipples, probably 3-4 months time. Still not sure how I feel about this but plenty of time to consider so no probs there. He mentioned that the NHS funding doesn’t however cover nipples (!). I just wondered, if any of you lovely ladies, had any experience of the costing of nipples?? (I was supposed to ask during appt - more out of curiosity for me & work colleagues - but completely forgot whilst I was there!!)

Hi Fizz

I had a new nipple created in 2012 for left LD reconstruction and there was never any debate about funding, as it was considered part of the recon ‘package’, so I am surprised that your PS had mentioned the funding issue to you. Or do you mean the areola tattooing as opposed to actually creating new nipples? Many trusts do not fund the tattooing as it is considered to be ‘cosmetic’ I guess, but the actual nipple itself I would have thought, would be funded (breasts come with nipples surely??).

Hope you don’t end up having to pay for them, It would be interesting to hear other ladies experiences of this.

Best of luck.

I had nipple recon 6 months after LD and Mx and I certainly didn’t have to pay for it? I am sure there plenty of other ladies on here in the same situation. Please feel free to Private message me if you would details of where I live etc. Keep badgering them, I really can’t see this to be true!

Hi FizzB,
I am also going to have my expander exchanged and then nipple created with tattooing to finish off. My surgeon has never mentioned no NHS funding for nipple but I will certainly check it with him in June. Could it be due to the area you live in?
Let me know if you have any further info, best wishes xx
