No DCIS found in lumpectomy

Hi all, I had my follow up with surgeon yesterday. WLE was to remove a 20mm DCIS, found after biopsy. However, surgeon has said in the histology results there is no DCIS, believes that the biopsy removed it. How can that even happen? Obviously I am thrilled, but also doubtful.

Hello Jellytot,
In 2021 this also happened to me.

I had a lumpectomy and nodes removed. My followup with my surgeon told me he found none also, and that it must have been removed by the biopsy. I also had 5 days of radiotherapy about 10wks later. I had small markers left in place so for future mammography.
My first annual mammogram was all good, but on my second annual mammogram I was found to have a local reoccurance. I was offered another lumpectomy, but I decided on a flat mastectomy. All good so far.
Sending hugs to you xx

Hi peterpan64, thanks for replying.
Sorry to hear you had reoccurrence but so glad to hear you’re doing ok now.
I was shocked to hear my DCIS had gone, in the biopsy. Surgeon said it was much smaller than first thought. He said he took wider than the 20mm so there is no doubt I am clear. They didn’t think there was a requirement for radiotherapy. Because the DCIS was removed in the biopsy, does that mean I won’t find out what “type” it was? How do I know if it was hormone positive etc? Still really confused and feeling a bit lost.

My surgeon explained the radiotherapy as ‘if you boke a glass onto floor, the surgery is like picking up the big bits , and sweeping smaller with brush and pan. The following radiotherapy is like hoovering up the bits you can’t see’.

Xxx
