Not getting reconstruction

Not getting reconstruction

Not getting reconstruction Hi
I am waiting to get the results from my second wle but think that it will go to mastectomy due to previous results. I have seen the plastic surgeon & looked at options - feel that I could cope with a prothesis better than all that sugery.
Anyone have simaler thoughts/ideas?
Felicity

prothesis for me Hi Felicity
I have had a double mastectomy after wle and partial mastectomy etc, i saw the plastic surgeon and after he had finished explaining the bits he was going to cut out to make the new breasts then skin from various places on my body i decided i would look like a patchwork quilt with no guarantee both would take, so i decided to stick with my prothesis, i have several different sizes depending on my mood (dolly or Tara PT) and get on very well with them also a bonus in the hot weather when other women are hot and sweaty under theirs i take mine off Ooh the bliss

Go for it I had a mastectomy in March 2004 (for invasive breast cancer) and never wanted a recosntruction. I feel strongly that not having a reconstruction should be presented by medics as a positive option, not second best.

I live comfortabley with one breast and a prosthesis.

Results from reconstruction can be amazignly good lookalikes but they can also be diastrous. Plus some of us don’t want a pretend breast. (mind you a prosthesis is a bit of pretend too…just less invasive and doesn’t hurt!)

Good luck whatever you decide.

I agree Jane hi jane
I hadn’t thought of it that way - but yes, not getting reconstruction was never offered as a positive choice - they went straight into all the stuff they could do to rebuild me!!!
It was only after much thought & also fear that the lightbulb lit & I thought, Hey - I don’t actually need to do this.
Thanks for that
Felicity

Good luck Felicity Really pleased if I’ve helped you to feel OK about your decision

Just watched a Trinny and Suzannah makeover programme (only not T and S…2 other owmen whose names escape me) with women with mastectomies…it was great to see a postive approach to prostheses.

best wishes

Jane

Felicity,
I too had 2 WLE and then a mastectomy. I agree with Jane, all the pressure was on to have reconstruction, they make you feel ‘odd’ if you don’t want it.

But 18 months later, I have never regretted my decision not to have it, I couldn’t see the point of all that extra surgery and risk of failure. When I’m dressed, no-one can tell the difference, and I never wore low-cut clothes anyway.

It really doesn’t take that long to get used to your changed body, so good luck to you.
